To believe such a story requires a great deal of ignorance. A process to optimize design, from conceptualization to resource procurement to manufacture to assembly, involves many steps, lots and lots of time and can't be done by just "connecting to a satellite", especially when it involves prototypes for which no assembly plants exist.

While this is fictional, I encourage anyone to read Superintelligence by Bostrom to know that such scenario is plausible, although an ai with a willingness to kill and ability to connect to satellites would be already too powerful by now.

Ai doesn't need to be conscious or human like, it can be totally alien, but it's enough for it to develop by itself to be a grave threat. Superintelligence can be defined as an ai being able to do anything a human can do, and more. In fields like chess, face recognition, workforce, computation speed, it's already surpassing us. All it needs now is to slowly combine those closed in systems and come from one general purpose ai.
