Because France is in fact the most nationalistic country in Europe. The concept of Nation is inherent to the Republic but in France the word nationalist has a different connotation than elsewhere. Historically the true "patriots" are people of far left. "Conservatives" are the liberals while the people on the left invoke virtue and the homeland as an unsurpassable horizon.
