it's def no "retreat and lose", but it's still weird. the US built over 11 compounds, 2 airfields, and have over 3k boots on the ground atm. in a so called "rogue nation".
normally, the US stay wherever they invaded. there's still thousands of soldiers in germany, korea, central america, italy, japan, everywhere. why would they abandon such a strategical important position in northern syria?
personally i could imagine that the us won't go anywhere. it's just political tactic by trump, to make a step towards turkey.

I wouldnt go as far as to say we invaded any of the countries, but we intervened and after the wars they wanted to keep us there in the Euro crew to back them up in case Russia wanted to start its own Operation Barbarossa.
These are all nations that are built up and industrialized for the most part, meaning we dont need to invest as much as we would in a shithole like Syria to stay there.
These compounds and airfields are literal drops in the bucket of the American war machine, and are almost all temp bases anyway, either to be sold to Russia/Syria or packed up and shipped back.
I agree that it is a political tactic by Trump though.

Because the situation in Syria has been a complete clusterfuck since day one under the Obama administration. The U.S. gave support to "moderates" who turned out to not be so moderate. I remember a while back one of these groups ran off their SF advisors while laughing that they played the Americans. We already have a difficult time in the ME figuring out who is who, more often than not we fuck it up.
