The real issue was the disintegration of the Mughal Empire. After the Mughal-Maratha civil war, the Marathas took control of the central Mughal provinces and the others split into Nawabates. So, Sindh, Bengal, Awadh and Carnatic were ruled by Nawabs who were in conflict with the Maratha Confederate.
Then in 1757, we had the battle of Plassey. Robert Clive along with EIC meets the Sultan of Bengal's armies at Plassey. The battle is composed as follows:
East India Company:
750 European (Whites)
2,100 Sepoys (Indians)
8 canons
Mughal Empire:
7,000 infantry (Mughals)
5,000 cavalry (Siraj Daulah)
53 fieldpieces (18 pound and 24 pound)
35,000 infantry
15,000 infantry of Mir Khan
Monsieur Sinfray (French support)
So obviously we should've won, right? What happened?
Firstly. 15,000 of Mir Khan's armies defected to the EIC, since the English had decided that if they win Bengal they would make him the Nawab - which is eventually what happened.
Secondly, the 35,000 infantry defected. Why? It's funny and sad. It started to rain. The British had already taken measures to cover up their gunpowder in waterproof materials. Meanwhile, Mughal gunpowder became wet and unusable. In the absence of gunpowder, the 35,000 infantry simply couldn't shoot. It was a military blunder 101. They accepted defeat.
So now the Mughals were compromised and outnumbered. And thus, we lost the Battle of Plassey. Allowing the EIC to take control of the province of Bengal - the Eastern flank of the Mughal Empire. The situation, in 1758, looked like pic related.
