The generals know the state of the war and care not as much for the geopolitics. Trump is not fully aware of those reasons either but knows hemorrhaging money from a fruitless war isn't wise.
We don't have a clear goal in Afghanistan anymore. There's little geopolitical importance, other than having a base of operations from which to exert pressure on Iran and the middle of nowhere China. There is really no reason to continue being there. Trying to forcibly try to change the "hearts and minds" of the people there is just bad PR and winning an ally in the country achieves little other than having an underdeveloped with some heavy metals/opiates; and possibly some air bases to strike at Iran/China.
The Taliban can just continually hide in Pakistan (our supposed ally that we send aid to despite viewing Americans the most unfavorably of any country in the world), and the majority of the people of Afghanistan want us out at this point.
At least Vietnam there was the goal of supporting a government against the Communists, who would align themselves with the Soviets. Syria, is, and has been a clusterfuck that we need not involve ourselves with. Fueling migrants into Europe just to ally with some Kurds, piss off the Turks, be a thorn to the Russians, and stopping a pipeline that is on hold anyway due to the war doesn't seem to be of much value.
So user, would you sacrifice your family, your kids, or your wallet to protect Syrians? If so then go ahead, book your flight and go join them. If not then fuck off.
I think there is importance in having a western power in charge, so to speak, but the reality is that these countries that we are involved in, are worthless. The people are worthless as long as they are living under Islam, which will be forever. They will have no potential to do anything--ever. I posted in another thread that a crackhead living on the street in the USA has more potential to do something positive than the average citizen in the ME.
In an era where people might have 2 kids at the most, American families are sending 50% of their children or 100% of their children to fight in a region of the world that produces nothing except for refugees.....and even more so now that virtually every Arab state is a failure.
It is naïve to think that a 50 year presence in an Islamic country will end with a successful democracy, or at the very least, another place like the UAE.

Generals don't know shit about foreign policy. They only know what they're told. They only understand what is needed to follow the orders of politicians. I would consult with them briefly, and plan out an exit strategy before making it official. But I don't give a fuck what their opinion about geopolitics is.
Generals know Warfare. Foreign policy is different.
Generals also tend to have a vested interest in either finishing a war through victory, or continuing one, because they are all about warfare, not diplomacy.
