Why are model trains dying out as a hobby, Jow Forums...

Why are model trains dying out as a hobby, Jow Forums? Despite having a long cultural tradition in western (and some other) countries, model train sales have been falling, miniature train clubs have been losing membership, and many train collectors are quite old. Why aren't younger people maintaining this vital tradition?

video games are better

I'll say Jews and you respond with fpbp

FYI every railroader thinks you guys are weird. And foamers like you who become railroaders get made fun of relentlessly.
-train conductor

Autists today prefer anime.

Train simulator games is a thing and probably has more users than model train collectors.

Based jean shorts

because you can do more in vidya

All of the people who are enthusiastic about weird hobbies like this and ham radio are caustic to the few newcomers who express interest. Also Patrick swayze used illegal parts

too hard to fit a model train in a studio apartment

it's expensive, consumes precious space and who the fuck rides trains anymore?

It's an expensive boomer hobby.

No space in my $500k 2 bedroom apartment.

They moved to miniatures games.

and it takes up so much space, a millennial living with his parents can't do it, even big lego is easier to put away

I’m 35 and making trying sets with my kids. It’s great bonding.

Because it's expensive AF and takes alot of space
And space is something most zoomers don't have because non of them can afford houses anymore.

model trains are more expensive than train simulators, and that's sayin' something

Fuck off the Swayze express is all legit

the internet became a thing and people were awared that most people think its super faggy/weird to spend hours building stupid weird faggy toy trains

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 20K)

this is the most autistic thing I've ever seen, what is the point again?

Stamp collecting died out as well. Is it because of non-white demographic change.

You're looking at it wrong. it's not about the trains themselves, it's about the creativity in creating a whole little world from scratch. Look at OP's image, only 1/8th of that table is taken up by train tracks. it's not train games that are the replacement for this hobby, it's city building and other creative games of that ilk. Minecraft, Cities Skylines, a sandbox to build your own world from the bottom up. Except the videogame version of indulging that creativity is much much cheaper. the guy in op's image probably has put over 5000$ into that table, easy.

this guy gets it.

The Machine Age is over and has been succeeded by the Information Age.

It's ultra-fucking expensive, and this is coming from the guy who plays Warhammer. As much as I'd love to chop up ans convert some chaos rape trains, a full train set costs more than my entire army combined.

>It's an expensive boomer hobby.

This

Also

>Be a Boomer
>Scream and bitch at their child that hobbies are for "children" only and that the only thing that matters is working an 80 hour a week job for free
>Wonder why your children don't have the money, interest or time for doing model trains later in life
>Slowly realise that your hobby is going to die out.
>Try to "force" young people to take an interest but only come across as creepy and worthless.

It really is amazing how fucking out of touch boomers are, I swear the lot of them have some type of mental disorder that prevents self reflection and contrition.

>Why are model trains dying out as a hobby, Jow Forums?
Cause it's really gay

>Implying model train fags aren't just the "autistic manchildren" of yesteryear

ham radio people are generally pretty cool

Chaos scum................

And if your a licensed ham radio operator don't have to renew tabs in Washington state

This nigga right here

Honestly, it is kind unfortunate to see it dying out, really. I've seen some pretty intircate models like that, and larger, and it's interesting to look closely and spot the small details that modelers cleverly hid in some of them.

Alas, all things must end eventually. The new age we're in does not take pride in much of anything, instead being raised in a superficial and disposable society.

>Except the videogame version of indulging that creativity is much much cheaper.
And you can share your autism worlds over the internet too. Of course the real problem is nobody wants to go to someone else's place to do LAN party shit anymore, they stay home and do stuff over the innernets.

anyone who still plays warhammer is a big fag hag. play a real tabletop war game. Unless its like old warhammer 1989

Ya 5 dudes shitting their pants in a basement sounds awesome

Are you sure about that? dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/spham.html

Hams figured out out a while ago, maybe it was in time for them to survive.

But how do you DUST IT?

I have a few old Transformers on display in my room and I have to use a can of compressed air to blow the dust off them every now and again. It doesn't seem like that would be possible with a railroad setup because of all the delicate trees and vegetation and whatnot.

How do you keep it clean?

No one has a spare basement in their $2,000 a month micro-apartment penal colonies

Our FD radio operator hasnt had new tabs in 20+ years

Attached: 57678789993.jpg (600x382, 44K)

This. When I was a kid I always wanted to make something like OP's pic.

because computers

Train simulator games

Model train collectors are 99.9% of the time just boomers trying to create a fantasy world with no niggers

i think i'm a latent enthusiast.

having some permanent tracks and a ride-on train circle my house would be really cool

something like this:

youtube.com/watch?v=t30BK1fjur8

but it ends there. this is the only train-related thing i've ever thought about.

Attached: hudson soft tracks.jpg (1043x743, 93K)

>play a city-building or management video game
>post the AARs to web forums or image boards
>stream it live on twitch, or watch someone else play it
>make or contribute to a wiki
>make or contribute to a mod of the game
>offer and receive input, generally be part of a hobby community

now compare that to spending thousands of dollars on foreign-made toy train parts and trying to put them together in a dingy basement
or explaining your toy collection to someone, or even finding someone that cares about your hobby
or getting in to the toy train hobby, and not being shut out by a bunch of boomers with vastly different life circumstances and available free time and disposable income
the internet and video games are vastly superior
someone mentioned ham radio, at least that teaches you useful skills
hell you learn more from video games than train modeling

Attached: sip.jpg (640x799, 71K)

shut up lying leaf your trains blow up

It's more of an older person's hobby, unfortunately. I have close family who are retired freight train engineers, and they love it. The reason why I think it attracted them so much is the fact how many cool unique designs there were for trains over the past century, whether its stream engines, or the 1st generation diesel's in the 40's-50's. Trains today look the same that they did in the mid 80's. Aesthetics no longer really play a part in their design at all. They are simply generic modular machines designed to get as much performance out of as possible.

Off topic, but listen to this. It's a 3000hp horsepower locomotive generator starting up. This is the powerplant that powers the electric traction motors... modern diesel-electric trains don't have transmissions or gears.

spoken like a tiny house living faggot

I used to be into model railroading ,what ruined it is the strict nature of the community and women joining the community. Not going off on a MGTOW rant, just women and strict rules don't mix. Accuracy was very important to model railroaders, and when women joined, accuracy went out the window. The OP's picture is a good example of accuracy going out the window , everything is too clean and looks brand new; there's no weathering of the buildings, no rust in the train cars, no intermittent graffiti ,no yellowing of the grass or trees, and you can bet your ass it's a woman that demanded it look clean and stock . Men want accuracy, women want crisp and clean.

Is this just another shitty bait thread? I don't know what is what on this stupid board anymore.

>tfw got interested in trains because of a lolicon hentai game

I even bought some model steam engines

Attached: 1460251067222.jpg (1200x1200, 295K)

Old Age and Treachery before youth and vigor you autistic-upside-down cuck.

>a tiny house living faggot

yes like most people my age I live in a small apartment
I loved model airplanes as a kid and still have a few
there is no way that I could put a starter train set anywhere though unless I bought a really cheap ranch house or something out in the middle of nowhere

no, autismguy
what ruined it was video games and all the old modelers dying off. I heard that a guy in charlotted had a massive train set but died, and the entire set was getting tossed in the trash because nobody wanted it. I guess if those that inherited it gave a shit, they could've sold it on eBay or something, but time is money or so they say

why do model train hobbyists think their hobby is high art? you guys play with toys KEK

Attached: 1542156065275 (1).gif (176x216, 492K)

No, My opinion is the correct opinion, I actually was part of a model railroad club, and I can tell you why I left

Younger autists have found other hobbies.
It's not that model railroads are completely dead - really well made ones draw thousands of visitors.

I’m not into modeling trains but I been painting on trains since early 2000s

Can't afford a house with a basement.

Gas yourself boomer - your generation is everything wrong with the world.

the club improved after you 'left'

niggas don't know bout my wigwag

Bobby has had about enough of your shit, leaf

This

I actually really like model trains, I just currently don't have nearly enough space at the moment.

Those fucking tiny pos plastic trees cost like $12 each

I can't wait to sell my shitty old NES collection in the attic for thousands of dollars one day, otherwise I"ll make a virtualrealitytube experience of me burning it in the backyard just to get the nintenfags triggered one final time

infoage.org/

For NJ anons. Model train display every year. I went last week.

They do not provide endless hours of entertainment and cost a shitload of money.

I still have my dad's layout in the basement. Should I fix it up and make a Jow Forums tier ethnotown?

>spending many hours making a model train set is not fun

I would if I had room. I think it's largely been replaced by vifya. You could just play Train Simulator or Cities: Skylines. Also people interested in electronics are into shit like Raspberry Pi's now, not HAM radio or models.

this, mainly. also everything is video games.

I've been selling off my old model train stuff, most of which I inherited from a relative.

About 2 years ago I went to a model train show to see if my stuff was worth anything. I noticed nearly everyone there was around 45 or older, mostly older.

stamp collecting died out because who the fuck sends letters anymore?

>Should I fix it up and make a Jow Forums tier ethnotown?
Holy shit
double check to make sure he didn't post pics of it online that are traceable back to you, or change it enough so that it's unrecognizable from the original user
but that shit would make a great OC thread
plus the salt thread resulting from it

Vidia. Also needs loads of time, patience and they are not cheap.

>endless hours of entertainment
I've helped clean out a lot of homes and the hobby thing is kind of a meme. Almost every time we're taking care of some old dead guy's basement or hobby shed we find some porn or a few bottles of liquor. A lot of hobbies are excuses to be left alone regularly

youtu.be/Ld0l37eFpEU

Shame. LAN parties and hot-seat heroes are fucking awesome. I had lost virginity to friends sister on one, first I backstabbed her in heroes and then backstabbed her in kitchen. Great time of vidia, vodka and hanging with friends.

youtube.com/watch?v=MHaZXSneOGQ
Because the advancement of remote control toys.

Because fewer and fewer have disposable income, and model trains are expensive and take up large spaces that people just can't afford anymore. Also, all NPCs have the same 3-4 hobbies that they're told to have (if they can even get their heads out of their phones long enough to even have a hobby)
It's a cool hobby tho. My dad had some cool stuff.

How the hell pi is for people in electronics? It is complete, I think you meant arduino and shit, at least there you can play with signals on pins.

I was always going to have a model train set but then boomers priced me out of the housing market and now I can't even afford a one bedroom piece of shit. Where would I put it?

this tradition should be revived

My brother and sister know the layout too well to disguise it from them. Also my entire hs used to drink beer in that basement, but I could start a new one. I guess now I have to decide what era. Mid 20th century USA (end of steam era) or Germany (those Märklin models in the Walthers catalogue always looked fun but were not in synch with what we did in this house. I could make a sweet German town with a little prison camp off to the side of town.

In your yard you autist youtube.com/watch?v=QpqIJutxKek

boomer shit

look at that set up....
boomers recreating a scale model of the nation that they inherited and then destroyed

if I can barely afford even the smallest houses I'm not going to have a yard big enough for a trainset.

Good point. Every rail station I have ever seen is run down in the nigger part of town filled with gang graffiti. These are bad representations of real life.

I think it can be partly blamed on the new kids growing up and not being able to afford a place to live with any semblance of 'extra' room for such a hobby. I had a trainset growing up in my room. Fun as hell as a kid. My father had some seriously antique trains (still does in boxes in the garage) that must be worth a fortune. I have played with a trainset since I was in elementary school. Would enjoy doing it again, but we just don't have the space AND I am well-off by most standards (six figures yadda-yadda) but it's an investment. Kids today have too many struggles to deal with.

Attached: IMG_20180904_181730.jpg (479x527, 125K)

That’s a sweet setup.
I was into that shit for a while in my teenage years, might just have to pick it up again once I relocate next year, I don’t want to get building on something and have to move a bunch of fragile stuff that’ll probably get rekt in transit.

>posted my post before reading others
>many are saying what I am saying.

Because people aren't as fond of imitation crab meat as they used to be

It’s cute that your generation, which embraced every degeneracy they were given agency to pursue, takes no responsibility for being such total faggots. Millennials are devoid of any personal accountability, but sure can blame.
t. Gen X who finds all of you annoying for being age-based identitarians like total dipshits

because its a white mans hobby and white men are dying out. honestly did you need a thread to figure this out?

Looks expensive

Various autistic simulator videogames. Train simulator for the hardcore model train weirdos, all kinds of citybuilding simulators for all the other model weirdos
