But...even earlier than this, you have the monastics of the early Christian church, from which the Islamic faith took the idea. So it's nearly 2,000 years old.

>fastin Here is the verse before it
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous Al-Baqara 2:183
So, yeah, no contradiction here. I agree.
Michael Phillips
But which Christians fast anymore? What does that say about the state of Christianity and the extent to which it has been innovated? I mean we even have Christian "yoga" now..
Nathaniel Jones
Also the early monastics didn't follow the Nicean creed of Jesus being God in the flesh (a great blasphemy) and were mostly wiped out by the Romans prior the syncretism with Paganistic Father/Mother/Son god worship+Easter+Christmas

>"Lived experience" - What the fuck? Thats a heckuva lot of confidence in "lived experience" to make it one of the five pillars of the world's largest religion (in number of actual practicing followers) and to decree as in the Qur'an "if you only knew.."

I lose about 120 pounds with intermittent fasting (eating one large meal per day) and keto over 10 years ago now, and have kept it off. Every time I go back to a high-carb diet I gain weight, but keto has so many benefits I don't mind staying on it full time.
>(((They))) added "intermittent" to the word fasting to make it sound more secular and less religious as if to claim it as a scientific discovery.
>Of course its intermittent, otherwise you would die. The word is redundant. Actually, intermittent fasting refers to the concept of eating daily, but in a smaller window. Regular fasting means that you spend several days fasting.
Anthony Roberts
Good for you. What do you eat regularly? No carbs at all?
Asher Lee
I stay under ~40 grams of carbs per day >all meats >canned tuna/salmon >eggs >fats/oils >lots of greens broccoli/spinach/brussels sprouts etc >cheeses
My diet is quite simple. My brother has gone a step further and has been exclusively on a carnivore diet for a little over a year now (health reasons, he didn't need to lose weight) and is really loving it so I am considering trying that.
There are many good resources for keto online - I would recommend staying away from all the fancy recipes made to trick you into thinking you can make keto chocolate pie or whatever. Stick to whole foods. If you get cramps or brain fog drink a cup of strong salty broth (or get some salt in another way). Your body utilizes salt much differently in keto. Read about insulin and glucagon and what each one does in your body and why keto makes you lose weight - understand the science.
Xavier Fisher
What you described, eating daily but in a smaller window, is called simply 'fasting' by the vast majority (99%) of people who've been doing it for the last 1400 years - muslims.
You don't just get to rename it in the name of secular science and a Joe Rogan episode.
Fasting for more than that should be called extended and ill advised fasting.
Justin Nelson

>I stay under ~40 grams of carbs per day >>all meats >>canned tuna/salmon >>eggs >>fats/oils >>lots of greens broccoli/spinach/brussels sprouts etc >>cheeses Thanks. Yeah, that does look quite simple to follow. I'm not clear on the keto science, other than the idea is to get your body to burn fat instead of carbs. That diet your brother is on sounds like what Jordan Peterson and his daughter have been talking about.

Lift some weights and you would look wayyyyyyyyy better

It doesn't matter where it was FIRST described. Many prophets have sent the same message from the same God to many people.
What matters is which religion is intact enough today that people realistically still fast for their purification, and have done so for over the past thousand years? =Islam

You can fast for many reasons. I did a full fast for 5 days to see what I could do physically without food if SHTF. Plus, intermittent fasting implies daily repetition of eating only at a specific time of day. One problem with the modern diet is constant higher levels of insulin. Putting more time between when you eat fights that. Nothing religious about it.
John Nelson
yeah man I know, I used to lift but haven't in years. Work + being a dad + laziness..
basically eating carbs raises insulin, a hormone which is responsible for making your body store fat. Insulin has an evil twin called glucagon, when one is high the other is low - they have an inverse relationship. Glucagon does the exact opposite, when it is high it tells your body to USE fat for energy. Eating low carb crashes your insulin and spikes glucagon. That's the most basic explanation possible.Human bodies are pretty nifty. If you're going to try it, buy a couple hundred keto-strips on amazon for 15 bucks and use them to help you gauge your level of ketosis. Takes about three days of eating under 30g carbs to get into keto. Once you are deep in keto or 'fat adapted' as they say, you can occasionally go up to 60g or so of carbs and stay in keto provided you go back lower the next day. You will also find your hair, skin, and nails become noticeably softer and healthier feeling.

Fasting is also a Jewish practice for conjuring spirits/magic. It was also part of Ancient/pre historic cultures. Roma’s and Greeks fasted for health purposes. General dietary guidelines and food restrictions are a constant across all cultures, across all time, for health/spiritual benefits.

after seeing my results my mother tried keto for, i think four days, and bought one of those breathalyzer things for keto measurement. they are VERY expensive to buy and use. The strips are dirt cheap and work fine. I'd go that route. Honestly the hardest part of doing keto is pressure from family/friends not understanding it and pressuring you or going out and having a hard time finding something to eat at a restaurant. Skinny feels better than *anything* tastes. I don't know how heavy you are, but when I started keto I was over 300lbs and for the first six months i was losing 2-3 pounds a week (that was super strict keto with one cheat meal every two weeks - i would give yourself a cheat day/meal every two weeks but more than that and it really cuts into weight loss) Truly best of luck to you man, if you try it.
Dominic Johnson
>everytime I go back to an energy dense diet I gain weight!! No shit. I don't understand the point of keto when you can just gauge your caloric uptake and not eat like a lard ass. Combine this with excercise and cooking with raw ingredients and you will never have a need for the latest dieting fad.
Carbs are fine if you use them, but most people stuck behind a computer screen will never use the carbs they intake.
Michael Martin
The down side of fasting and low carb diet is the temporary reduction of IQ. Carbs are bad for your weight but gives you the dopamine and helps to lower cortisol.
Connor Russell
this is the thing, I don't have any problems maintaining on keto - however when i eat a normal diet i have ravenous hunger and its very difficult to eat the right number of calories. Yeah absolutely if I had the willpower I could eat a normal diet, but I don't and keto works fine (and like I said there are other great perks as well).
Jaxson Brooks
I used keto to lose the last 20 to 30lbs I had stuck to me and haven't gone back since. Don't get the breath test or the piss strips. If you want to do it right get the blood ketone measurement device, which is similar to the blood sugar testing device diabetics use. It is the most accurate measurement to make sure you are in ketosis. Make sure you supplement magnesium and eat salt to avoid the "keto flu" which is basically being dehydrated as your body doesn't hold as much water when you cut out carbs.
My diet consisted of a lot of eggs, salmon, avocados, grass fed beef (ribeye steaks generally have highest fat content), chicken legs with skin, small amounts of cheese and a variety of nuts. The goal is to break your macros down so 70% of calories come from fats, 25% from protein and 5% from carbs. That being said you should aim to have no more than 20 net grams of carbs per day (carbs minus fiber is not carbs). Do not have a cheat day as it can easily knock you out of ketosis and then it can be annoying to get back in. If you want to cheat look into keto alternatives like Fat Head Dough.
Your biggest enemy will be your friends and family who think it is a fad diet or try to pressure you into eating carbs. If you go to a restaurant look for places that sell ribeye steaks. Get that with butter and a veggie salad with no dressing. You'll be fine.
Chase Smith
Water fasting (IF) is not the same as the fasting they you do during ramadan, which is incredibly unhealthy. If you drank water during ramadan i might agree with you but Islams fasting = bluepilled
Cameron Powell
The Standard American Diet is just a fad that has been around for a long time. Look into the history of the food pyramid. It is obvious that in today's world, with the changing of modern work, we don't need large amounts of quick access energy which is what carbs provide.
Jordan Lewis
I tried water fasting for a week and tapped out after three days
Sebastian Robinson
Eat more veggies to fill you up, eat some whole grains or complex carbs to keep you sated longer, and avoid processed foods, sugars, and other things that will dominate your gut bacteria. Most cravings come from your gut bacteria, and remaining "full" is a simple question of eating foods that your body can't process quickly. The longer it takes your body to process a food, the longer you will be sated.
As for ravenous hunger, this will be a problem if you use time be gluttonous. Your mind will become use to being able to eat on demand, and will have to be retrained to adhere to a proper metabolism. I find scheduled meals is the best way to defeat this, as it trains your body to become use to eating on a schedule. From there you only need to be certain your meals are wholesome and you will feel a lot healthier. 3 meals a day, with an afternoon snack if you can't make it to supper. Later, but lighter, supper if you often feel hungry at night, along with a filling breakfasts.
But if keto works for you keep at it, I guess. It is just strange to me that a normal diet is branded and used for marketing purposes, and just reminds me of every other fad diet that has been a thing. They all have one thing in common: low carb intake to lose weight. A fundamental understanding of what carbs are and their use is all you really need in a diet, which usually breaks down to: >physically active? Carbs are beneficial >not physically active? Less carbs are better Of course if you are trying to burn fat carbs need to be avoided, but I find there is often a lot of mysticism to diet and nutrition when the reality is it's pretty simple.
Jacob Gray
>Water fasting (IF) is not the same as the fasting they you do during ramadan, which is incredibly unhealthy. If you drank water during ramadan i might agree with you but Islams fasting = bluepilled
You mean Abrahamic fasting? Thats how those who follow the religion of Abraham fast. Exodus 34:28 Esther 4:16
Lincoln Jenkins
If you are physically active those carbs are beneficial. Trying doing farm work without them and you will feel exhausted all the time. Carbs have their place, but for the people who lead sedentary lives they are a bane. Your body will not waste energy, so if you don't use the abundance of energy in carbs it WILL be turned to fat.
Again, quite simple and the mysticism of these modern diets is unneeded. Energy in, energy out. The body is efficient and will not waste a vital resource.
Ayden Smith
But user, why would you _not hate jews? I sure am skeptical of your memeflag, moshe.

They added intermittent because in the Bible fasting is done multiple days in a row. Check it out.
Easton Collins
Call it whatever you want, i call it water fasting.
Jose Morales
What I am saying is that most people these days are working at desks, not on farms. Therefore a low carb diet would likely be more beneficial for them as the carbs to fat conversion would not take place. As well you are less prone to snacking on keto as you don't get the blood sugar peaks and troughs. I weight lift and do marathon training on keto as well. That being said I had the extra fat to burn so it worked out almost as an advantage for me.
Justin Rivera
bunch of faggots in here calories in vs out doesnt matter if its 1 meal or 10. This shit isnt rocket science, you neets just have no self control
Connor Turner
>My body reacts the same whether I'm constantly grazing or feeding it in small windows I seriously hope you don't believe that.

This is wrong. Intermittent fasting is distinct from regular fasting by being done every other day rather than irregular multiday religious fasts
Colton Green
you might be a retard if you think eating less than you output wont result in weight loss
Cooper King
So much this. I have the same story except it was about 50 lbs for me. Do a round of IF with YHCL and fasted morning cardio (and lifting a ton of weights, naturally) every winter when my work season slows down get shredded as fuck. Love it.
I see a lot about fasting but I dont really understand who it is intended for. Should people who are doing harsh manual work every day even consider a fasting regiment? At what weight does a fasting regiment of any kind become dangerous? I'm 6"4 160lbs and I think I'd drop dead if I did a fasting regiment for a long length of time.
Jordan Lee
fasting is for faggots with no self control and have to condense their meals into 1 or 2 a day to stay within a caloric range.
Ryder Powell
keto is bad for your adrenals, thyroid, arteries, hormones, bones and penus

Fasting was intended to bring about conscious justice by the rich who could now empathize with the poor who fast by necessity of labor income. Its what keeps the balance in check. Also its healthy to some degree as a secular practice like dieting

Fasting for health and religious reasons predates judaism by over 2000 years. Not everything is DA JOOS and not everything that correlates to them is automatically fake or evil.
Blake Adams
Intermittent fasting isn't healthy, you put your body into sugar shock every time you eat after starving yourself, which causes your body to store as much energy as it can because it believes food is becoming scarce. What you should be doing is eating less overall; and eating smaller meals with healthy snacks throughout the day, supplemented by exercise. But oh no, then you'd have to eat vegetables and get off your ass instead of just sitting there starving yourself, which takes no effort whatsoever. Eat healthy + cardio = thin. Eat healthy + protein + weight training = bulk. Eat shit + cardio + weight training = still fat. Your diet is the most important part.
Christopher Davis
The Eastern Orthodox Church has prescribed fasts for about 180 days a year. So, lots of us fast. See Also, it is COMPLETELY WRONG to say that the Holy Trinity includes St. Mary. Mary is rightly called Theotokos, but she has never been considered part of the Holy Trinity. This is a stumbling block for many and I understand that it may not “make sense” to you, but then again, why should the infinite God and Creator of the Universe “make sense” to your finite mind? Anyway, God has revealed Himself to us as three Persons in communion: The Father Almighty, the only-begotten Son (begotten of the Father before time existed, before the creation of the Universe), and the Holy Spirit. The Persons in communion with one another in Love. It doesn’t “make sense” but who are we to argue with God? If God chooses to think of Himself as three Persons of the same essence in communion, who are we to argue? I hope that cleared up your very flawed idea that Christians somehow consider St. Mary to be greater than human. Indeed, the reason we hold her in such high esteem is that her glorification by God Almighty is the very same awaiting you and me and everyone who hears the Word of God and does as He commands. Merry Christmas and God bless you.
Elijah Moore
Fasting can be attributed to the Vedic scriptures dating back further than 6000 years.
Austin Roberts
The entire idea of "Christian" yoga is so fundamentally wrong I don't even know where to begin.
Yoga poses are offerings to the 330 million Hindu gods. Many Westerners who practice yoga today are unaware that the physical positions assumed in yoga symbolize a spiritual act: worshiping one of the many Hindu gods. To a Hindu, yoga is the outward physical expression of a deep spiritual belief. You cannot separate one from the other.
If they do yoga at your church, think about this: yoga means “yoke” in Sanskrit. It’s a different yoke from the one Jesus referred to when he said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30)
What is a practice yoked to Shiva the Destroyer, the “Lord of Yoga,” doing in the church of our Lord Jesus Christ? Can you imagine a Mosque doing "Islamic" yoga?
People can't agree on diet. Everyone has their own opinion on what the best diet is. Is that because people believe that their way is the best way and that there is a 'one size fits all' approach? I've never read a thread online where everyone agrees on the same principles of a diet.
It's easier with sodium and potassium supplementation. Have done several seven day fasts and one ten day. Basically no muscle loss, significant fat loss around a pound a day. These results are after having disregarded the water weight loss associated with entering a ketogenic state.
Great for your health. Gets autophagy rocking hard and removes defective cells, growth hormone through the roof, and can actually cause stem cells to release new daughter cells. Amazing stuff. Not so well known in usa because you can't make money off it.
Ayden Martin
why are you eating enough sugar to get sugar shock that doesn't happen with normal food, even if you're actually starving and wolf down starches. Though you can get folate buildup and hallucinate like fuck.
Parker Flores

Fasting was already in practice when humankind first discovered fire, it's not spiritual or religious invention dumbo. Intermittent just means breaking it daily, several month long water fasts exist.
