They made us believe we were eating delicious lean meats soups and vegetables but the reality is school lunches were still chicken nuggets, white bread, a scoop of corn all dipped into high fructose ketchup. My public school food was pretty decent always with options for fruits and vegetables as well as the option to get a tuna sandwich or PBJ if you didn't care for the hot meal that day. But I've seen some horrendous photos of American school lunches. I really don't see why it's so hard for parents to send their kids to school with a proper meal. School lunches are a lot more expensive than packing a ham and cheese sandwich, cheese stick, carrot sicks and water bottle.

The one weird thing that I remember is that we would regularly have "happy meal day" and everyone would get a McDonalds happy meal for lunch. I thought that was just bizarre even when I was a kid.

When I moved back to Canada, my schools never even had hot lunches. They had a lunch program which would give like... a shitty gas station type sandwich a dessert and a fruit.

I think Canada should be the one getting ribbed for shitty lunches.

I was in High School during Obama. Lunches were worse than prison food. I looked up the companies that deliver food to the local prisons. The prison food was like actual meals. what they made as school was literally to just keep kids fed. bare minimum

Back during the 80's and 90's McDonald's started an education program where they would provide food for schools and donate money to the district. As I'm sure you know, it was a huge marketing ploy to get more kids hooked on McDonald's that they ended up making millions off of.

School lunch programs are a huge joke and waste of money. There was a documentary back in 2006 where a British chef went to both Britain and American schools and showed how much money those shitty cheese rolls cost and how schools can save literal millions hiring and making actual food. Of course it was all a bust as school districts and lunch workers didn't like the "extra work" of making nonfrozen mac and cheese.

The school and state shouldn't be the ones feeding children at all. When I grew up every kid brought their own lunch to school and most kids ate fairly healthy food. Sandwiches and fruit mostly. I'm in favor of kids bringing their own lunches and schools should just stick to education on health and exercise.
