No, it wasn’t directed at Britain. After you said you were to leave after WWII everybody was happy, but then many Muslims started feeling insecure because Hindu Nationalists were becoming very vocal and the Congress began pandering to the Hindu issues like casteism etc., so the Muslims felt insecure that they would be a minority in a majority Hindu country. Obviously this was paranoia since India was going to be a secular country anyway, but still it persisted and the Muslim league began rallying for it. At that time when WWII was at its peak, Congress instructed everybody to not serve in the army since the Brits had promised independence aka dominion status in WWI if we served but then declined. But then the Muslim league agreed and said Muslims will serve in battle, and then the British government accepted that they will provide a separate Muslim electorate. After consulting Hindus and Muslim representatives an imaginary line was drawn within just 3 days on a map (this is not an exaggeration but it only took 3 days). Now, on the ground level many people feared they would be stuck on the other side. Then the Muslim and Hindu nationalists began spreading rumours and fake news to trigger Hindu-Muslim violence. The reason being that if Muslims are exterminated from an area and Hindus live there it becomes a part of India and vice versa.
