I'm a liberal democrat and I'm a bit confused. For years, i've been on the left and I hope that one day the U.S. would be a socialized country. With outrages healthcare costs and expensive schools, I think we could do better.
Well I was at work today and I got into a political conversation with a conservative friend of mine. We got to talking about left vs right, and talked about things like socialized medicine and free education. You see, my co worker is more along the lines of letting people choose their health care and give them the "liberty" of going to college or not. Of course I told him that none of what he said makes sense, because why would anyone want to pay so much money for healthcare? Or go into crazy debt because of school?
I told him he was being sort of a Nazi.
This is when things got heated. He told me that, in fact, it was the Nazi's who were socialists. I didnt believe him of course, so I asked him to provide proof. He then showed me the Nazi page on wikipedia, some right wing publication website. I was shocked to see that the word "Nazi" actually means national socialism.

Left Right is a bit too simple, and most other people over complicate it. At base there is 3 core political value structures. Classical Conservatism, Classical Liberalism, and Collectivism. That is also the order they appeared starting with the Enlightenment period. Nations had mostly Monarchs, nationalism, mercantilism. The Left was originally classical liberals that were often New money people, wanting free competition, everyone treated equal, a way to break into, or break down the aristocracy.
Marx got popular especially in France where the left quickly morphed to be dominated by collectivists. It was slower in the UK as the political parties shifted from Conservative vs Liberal to Conservative vs Labor party with Liberals becoming a minor party currently named Liberal Democrats.
So Conservatives originally had power, and they kept loosing or giving ground to the Liberal coalition. Eventually attatudes changed and with the onset of the Great Depression former liberals switched to Collectivism. With WW2 it was reactionary Conservative governments that fought Liberal and Collectivists and lost. Conservatism became taboo, and after a while the "Right" began to be a coalition/hybrid of Liberals and Conservatives vs collectivists. People for a long time who were classically Conservative used terms like Third Position.
Now this is something in line with my own thinking. Hitler apologism is somewhat warranted as he has OBVIOUSLY been unfairly maligned by Allied and Jewish propaganda, but he was somewhat an imperialist warmonger as time went on.
