I can't recall all the details of this, especially the geological ones, but Somalia probably has a fuckton more oil than people are led to believe. Like, gulf monarchy-tier proven reserves that are kind of a well-kept but technically open secret. He showed me some U.S. State Department documents verifying that our government actually operates on the assumption of proven reserves there far in excess of official reports (or did at the time of those documents; most of the them were admittedly from the early 1990s leading up to Gothic Serpent).

He basically considered the constant foreign interference and instability in Somalia to mostly stem from Saudi Arabia, which is well aware of the true nature of oil reserves in the region and can't stomach the idea of seeing a rival supplier emerge across the Red Sea.

There was a geological reason for Saudi wariness of a stable Somalia as well. A hopefully semi-accurate description of this according to my vague recollections: something about the oil reserves in the Arabian Peninsula having a far larger geographical footprint than any official map will show, and actually running clear across the Red Sea into East Africa, but that gravity basically favors the "Somalian side" of this reserve pool, so that any massive oil extraction operations in Somalia would eventually start to slowly "drain" the "Saudi side" down across the Red Sea into Somalian territory.

His family (which is one of the more politically important ones in Somalia) bought up a bunch of the alleged oil land there, but his siblings ended up concluding that the international political pressures against making these oil fields known and opening them to exploitation was too strong, and they sold their land off to him. The man himself did not share their pessimism, and entertains some serious hopes of living like a damned Saudi prince before the end of his lifetime.

Hearing about what Somalian immigrants are led to expect about the United States before arriving here was kind of eye-opening as well, and went a long way toward explaining why most of them act the way they do. The propaganda emanating from the Somalian government itself basically tells its people that the United States is a "land of do-nothing", and that the government will provide for everyone's needs and leisure if you can just get there. A lot of those people literally show up here quite sincerely expecting that they will never have to work again, and assuming that this just the "normal American lifestyle". He assured me Somalia was far from the only shithole country in the world whose government portrays Western countries this way to its citizens.

He actually felt the main obstacle to assimilation for immigrants was the corrupting influence of large cities (drugs, materialism, nightlife culture, etc.). Basically nothing about life in Somalia prepared people to indulge in any of that shit with the slightest hint of responsibility. In his opinion, no incoming immigrants from Third World countries to the U.S. should be ever settled in major cities. He felt assimilation could basically work out if they spent their first years in "small town America" and were trained to absorb traditional American values and work ethic without the lures of crime of hedonism available as a negative counterweight.
