Stuxnet was for a SCADA system. Electric grids are ICS systems. Thus this cannot be stuxnet. There may be parts of stuxnet integrated in to the malware if this is a cyber attack. I doubt it. Electrical grids fail all the time.

Stuxnet was a piece of malware that targeted one specific plant. It was programmed to stay inactive anywhere else, even if the same software environment (Siemens PCS7) was present.
So it will not be literally Stuxnet.
But using the same technology on another plant is possible.

Jeez. I remember PopSci doing a cover story on EMP in the 90's. I bought that fucker quick. Wish I still had it. EMPs are easypeasy and more destructive than a nuke. I never thought it'd be this long before usage but now that I think of it, this is one of the most devastating times now that digital is everywhere.

I'm going with an orbital missile defense system gone haywire or being highjacked. The very regular, very steady pulsing gives hints to the possible use of a laser when you watch closely. The lack of green and orange arcs, the continued burning (after most power systems would auto-isolate the circuit and reroute power) and the thermal blooming and suffusion of light in some videos (being almost perfectly circular when seen from below) also seems odd. There was a ground stop issued for nearby LaGuardia as well, even after the light was gone and power, etc. was confirmed restored and steady.

It was not STUXNET. If any sabotage was afoot, it was likely Russian or Chinese (their toolkits are heavily informed by **UXNET and the released kits from various agencies but it was likely NOT Israel or even Iran), but my theory is that an SDI platform satellite or prototype of the same is involved. We would otherwise have had definite and solid answers by now. There are no transformers whose capacitance would allow that long of an arcing incident after depowering (which was certainly done almost immediately by safety systems).

Your mileage may vary, but when I saw it online and observed, the fire sure seemed to pulse verrrry precisely. Pulsing lasers is used to prevent plasma formation that could block a continuous beam (and within the atmosphere, the plasma could go right back to the laser itself). If there is a video somewhere of the beginning of the incident, with the light slowly spreading out in rough time with the pulses, that would settle it, as the plasma dispersal and ionization process from forcing the beam through the atmosphere would proceed in a long pulse, then a pause for the plasma to degrade and disperse, then smaller pulses (that push through, but also are somewhat absorbed by remnant plasma, illuminating it in the color of the laser)-disperse pattern.
