I have witnessed one of those transformers blow about 20 years ago. I was about 15 miles away, working midnights as a patrol deputy.
The sky lit up like a blue daylight. I thought it was something on the hill about a mile away. Come to find out the other deputy, about 30 miles from me (basically 15 miles the other direction from it) saw it too.
It took us almost an hour to figure out what it was.
Never seen anything like it until I watched the video from NY.

I live near an airport, so nothing wierd about seeing planes going in all different directions, but the other night there were 12-15 planes all coming from one direction at the same time. I wondered if they were coming from another airport due to something like the gatwick saga, but I couldn’t find any news on it.
