Yes, I think this is the point. 'Virtue' nowadays is as poisoned a word as 'liberal'. We're not in the old Roman republic ... we're in bat country today! The 'virtue' I see today negates life as it negates the fear attached to it. It is the incel's guilty pleasure. "Atlas Shrugging" is what Fransisco tells Hank to do if people are unwilling to reciprocate virtue. Atlas symbolizes those who keep the world running- and who can continue to do so if they leave society...but society can't continue without its Atlas-types.

This. Also, even where government has no inherent stake it is culturally depleted. Asking questions is not the aim anymore. Psychology ... agree with your verdict. I've read his name several times here but failed to investigate. "Drugs are the answer" ... two thoughts on that: there is a select few people (with a special place reserved in hell) who barely scratch the threshold of neurological activity for true understanding. Now if you skew those people's brain chemistry with drugs at the right dosage they may pass the threshold and for a while feel and actually BE 'enlightened'. But this is a mere illusion, they cannot uphold this state of mind. Worse, maybe some could actually reach 'enlightenment' naturally but the shortcut they take ruins their chances forever. Second, fugg antidepressants, they don't even act directly on the chemical circuit they are supposed to (oh and personal experience: paradoxical effect of SSRIs is NOT funny!)
Concerning statesmanship: I just had the idea that maybe the agriculturalist/pastoralist split led to differing view on how those capable of 'leadership' (understanding of the masses) perceive those they intend to 'control'. The concept of a world government would only work as not-1984 with an outside competing agency (space colonies???).

Yes, something like that. It is a thought fragment right now, I usually used agri/pastoralist to explain subtle differences in behaviour on a genetic level as environments were very different (especially if we see pastoralist as semi-nomadic). Back to point above, maybe it is about how the framework is set. Have a blockade in my brain right now, have to think about this later...
