Why don't we all just build payment systems around direct deposits? Credit card companies are pretty monolithic, so they have the ability to shift weight around, but there's a hell of a lot of banks out there, particularly local banks and credit unions, and it would be hard to get all of them to collude. Perhaps they might be able to get Bank of America to play ball, but nobody should be using them anyways. Moreover, direct deposits tend to function as a sort of electronic check, which banks can't exactly deny when it's used for legal purposes.

So we build something like Paypal or Cashapp, and use direct bank transfers as the primary method of getting money from banks to the app, instead of credit/debit cards.
