I have worked on and off in IT for 20 years and this has been my experience.
It pays well, but the trade off is being surrounded by people you would never want to hang out with outside of work.
And its getting worse. I have 40 year olds at my work who disappear from the office to go outside and catch rare pokemons.

I'm unironically sure these people have good talent, this is just the strange kiddy social gathering stuff IT folks like to do for some reason.

Corporate IT is like this because they have too many unskilled females and diversity hires to meet quotas.
The women don't actually work, they just organize parties, potlucks, and other "trust building" and "office culture" parties or diversity training.

Try working in Security or Design.
You need to be an adult in those environments, and you need to produce working product.

Office IT is just tech support and a few sysadmins. They don't do real work 90% of the time.

Every IT worker I've met:

All kinds of in-house support groups for "marginalized people" and/or emotionally/psychologically fragile people, weekly pep talks for anyone who wants to attend, board games, pinball machines, video game rooms, yoga studios, tons of restaurants for employees to eat for free, laundry service, absolutely no dress code (you want to wear shorts and fuzzy slippers to a meeting, knock yourself out!), plus more.
The problem is, a lot of this shit is spreading to other companies who are not involved in tech, because millenial-staffed HR departments salivate at these things and want to integrate them into their own companies (like the one I work at).

My company must be the opposite. I work for a small MSP, about 8 total employees. We have one guy that 3D prints action figures and paints them then re-sells them. Another one that just smokes pot outside of business hours and plays his PS4. The other guy is a miserable man that's going through a rough divorce. Another guy that's just a dumbfuck that fakes it till he makes it and is essentially just an onsite tool that we have to guide around. And another guy that's a juggalo. I'm just the weird one that lives in a cornfield and has no internet or a TV at home and prefers to blow shit up.

We had one man-child we hired, dude was like mid 30s. He brought in all of his Overwatch shit on his desk, was really loud, somehow had a hot wife that bitched about him all the time, and all he cared about outside of work was pop-culture and video games. He was fired within a month. Had two other guys that were like that, also fired within a month.

It's gotten better, Windows 10 has cost us some residential business losses, but has helped a bit with business with 365 and Azure. I just miss the old days of keeping everything on a single server. The internet backbone here is garbage and all of our clients want to go VoIP now. We had it for a time and had to go back because the internet drops out so frequently.
