NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is approaching the meteor named Ultima Thule.
1) Ultima = "Last" in Spanish/Portuguese.
2) Thule = The alleged ancient land.
So why is Ultima Thule named that way?

Ultima is latin, not just Spanish Portuguese. Other languages use variations of it, and in Romanian they use Ultima as well.
The name is just a cool sounding way of saying something along the lines of "last frontier" to signify that they are delving into the early formations of celestial bodies.
