Why are we funding NASA to explore space and the universe and literally create it as they travel further away from point zero of the simulation, planet Earth? There's nothing out there. Just a bunch of low-res pixelated shapes. That is, until we "obverse it" and be amazed when we finally get clearer pictures of the "objects" that we find in space. Haven't any of you played No Man's Sky? That exactly what our world is. A seeded procedural world, with nothingness surrounding it as far as the eye can see, until the eye goes further and generate more reality. We are spending so much money on "space exploration", while not spending more time understand this fundamental principle: that the entire universe doesn't exist at all and that is procedurally created.
"The term procedural refers to the process that computes a particular function. Fractals, an example of procedural generation, express this concept, around which a whole body of mathematics—fractal geometry—has evolved. Commonplace procedural content includes textures and meshes. Sound is often procedurally generated as well and has applications in both speech synthesis as well as music. It has been used to create compositions in various genres of electronic music by artists such as Brian Eno who popularized the term "generative music"."
Aren't you excited by this news? An HD 4x4 pixel picture of what the universe looks like far away from this high-res world. Wee lads. I want to become an astronaut now. That sure is a lot of money per pixels if you ask me. I wonder what we could achieve if we spent a couple of billions of dollars instead. We might even get a 640x480 image.
In computer graphics, accounting for Level of detail[1][2][3] involves decreasing the complexity of a 3D model representation as it moves away from the viewer or according to other metrics such as object importance, viewpoint-relative speed or position. Level of detail techniques increase the efficiency of rendering by decreasing the workload on graphics pipeline stages, usually vertex transformations. The reduced visual quality of the model is often unnoticed because of the small effect on object appearance when distant or moving fast.
Although most of the time LOD is applied to geometry detail only, the basic concept can be generalized. Recently, LOD techniques also included shader management to keep control of pixel complexity. A form of level of detail management has been applied to texture maps for years, under the name of mipmapping, also providing higher rendering quality.
It is commonplace to say that "an object has been LOD'd" when the object is simplified by the underlying LOD-ing algorithm.
Now look at NASA's latest earth shattering "findings" and think about this concept.
Ryder Lewis
As far as I can remember this is the first time that NASA releases a picture that is that pixelated. And then a couple of days later, once the simulation has generated (rendered) a believable result, they release a higher definition image.

In computer graphics, mipmaps (also MIP maps) or pyramids [1][2][3] are pre-calculated, optimized sequences of images, each of which is a progressively lower resolution representation of the same image. The height and width of each image, or level, in the mipmap is a power of two smaller than the previous level. Mipmaps do not have to be square. They are intended to increase rendering speed and reduce aliasing artifacts. A high-resolution mipmap image is used for high-density samples, such as for objects close to the camera. Lower-resolution images are used as the object appears farther away. This is a more efficient way of downfiltering (minifying) a texture than sampling all texels in the original texture that would contribute to a screen pixel; it is faster to take a constant number of samples from the appropriately downfiltered textures. Mipmaps are widely used in 3D computer games, flight simulators, other 3D imaging systems for texture filtering and 2D as well as 3D GIS software. Their use is known as mipmapping. The letters "MIP" in the name are an acronym of the Latin phrase multum in parvo, meaning "much in little".[4] Since mipmaps, by definition, are pre-allocated, additional storage space is required to take advantage of them. They are also related to wavelet compression. Mipmap textures are used in 3D scenes to decrease the time required to render a scene. They also improve the scene's realism[citation needed], at the cost of 1/3 more memory per texture.
The further you are from the "observed" object, the lower the mipmap value is.
LOD 3 for reference is what the first pics from NASA were. LOD 0 is now what they pretend was always there from the start. Try Googling it, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find LOD 0 refs. I guarantee you that in 1 month, you will never be able to find LOD 3 on the net, it will have been totally memory holed.

>Reality Doesn’t Exist Until We Measure It, Quantum Experiment Confirms The way they're talking about quantum physics is wrong. None of these experiments mean that reality doesn't exist until measured, all it does is confirm that the reality apparent to us is different from the actual reality. This is a pretty basic philosophical concept. It's a shame that scientists aren't trained in philosophy, considering that the various sciences were originally referred to as natural philosophy. Decartes would have a field day with this stuff.

How Mandelbrot's fractals changed the world In 1975, a new word came into use, when a maverick mathematician made an important discovery. So what are fractals? And why are they important?
I don't think that you can comprehend any of this material. But posting it for the others that can.

All this means is that they're focusing more on that spot, i.e. zooming in further. It doesn't mean we live in a computer simulation. Even if we did, why would you want to not go to space and build a space empire?
Cooper Young
It's low res because the telescope's lens and cpu can't make the distant image sharp enough. How can you be this dumb? Ever heard of people with glasses? You know what happens when you take the glasses away? Their vision becomes low res blurry mess.

Because it's meaningless. Totally. Meaningless. Nothing exists unless we observe it. Nothing. At all.

Ah yes, of course. Why did I not think about this before. Thanks for your contribution. We're done here. Thread's over.
Can you respond to this? This is vastly interesting to me as I haven't heard this perspective of simulation theory. It's a lot more persuasive than "oh hurr durr it could be a simulation so who do whatever"

This is a solid and journey user, despite there being others. We are too disparate. The sooner you come to terms with that the farther you can go in finding truth. The problem with this theory is that the Universe is not algorithmic like a simulation. To me, it seems as if there is a desire within the Universe to approach a higher level of order, with the force of entropy opposing it. See the creationist arguments against evolution. Creationists are wrong in their conclusions, but their arguments against evolution are very solid. My point in saying this is that there is some force driving the Universe, but there is an element of randominity found in the force of entropy and in quantum mechanics, at least apparent randominity. I wish I wasn't so tired so I could examine this more.
Ryan Roberts
>It's too late anyway, you can't go back. Keep moving forward. This is also how I feel lately. An entire lifetime spent trying to warn others. This thread might end up deleted, every time I post on this god damn place to try to discuss about important and relevant subject, I end up being muted, while garbage threads are promoted and tolerated. It's all so tiring. But I'm not wiling to give up yet, as I need to reach some people in this world. If I reach even 1 person, my goal will be accomplished.

You have no argument.

So if this thread matters to you, think that I created it for you. Even if we are dozens, our opinion still matters and our ideas one day will reach the mass.

I've posted many links explaining in great details the concept of MipMaps. Now take some time to understand the ideas behind it and now transpose it to this thread content. What else do you want me to do exactly? Spoon feed you with more content?
If it's all a simulation, then why does defunding them even matter?

It's not the masses that matter, just the critical mass. Which is VERY much smaller than you think. Keep moving. Read the Dark Forest series if you're looking for some good entertainment, and be like Wade when you're done. Advance at all costs.

>between a 39 percent and 85 percent chance that we’re alone in the observable universe.
“[W]e find a substantial probability that we are alone in our galaxy, and perhaps even in our observable universe,” the researchers led by Anders Sandberg wrote. “’Where are they?’ – probably extremely far away, and quite possibly beyond the cosmological horizon and forever unreachable.”
“The problem, according to the researchers, is that plugging numbers into the Drake equation as a ‘best guess’ implies certainty and results in misleading estimates,” said Motherboard. “Probability distributions, on the other hand, allows for uncertainty to be captured in the equation.”
There is a 53 to 99.6 percent chance we are alone in our galaxy, along with the aforementioned odds of being alone in the universe.
when i did LSD for the 1st time when i was 17. but since much younger i always knew OP was a faggot.

It only matters in this version of this simulation. That's the only plane of existence where your actions will matter and have any impact. This is the only reality where who you are, matters. So why not? What do you have to lose?
Lincoln Perry
But that's not true at all. I'm all for the idea of us living in a computer simulation, but the thought that we are the only user created species in the simulation is also absurd. If we think about ourselves in the terms of game AI, perhaps we're still in the resource building phase of the simulation and there is going to come a time for us to move into the laning phase, where we will meet some ayy's
Even if all your jump the gun meme "theories" were true and we did live in a seeded procedurally generated universe then the seed would be our reality, still leaving a set universe to discover.
This is like saying, well guys you know, everything follows a pattern and is made of particles, why bother paying attention to physics?

We have known for years there are floaty rocks in space. Scientists are gubmint funded dole seekers. They think people should pay for them to spend their lives looking at gay floaty rock, but consistently fail to produce the stardrive.
Connor Hall
>seeded procedurally generated universe then the seed would be our reality, still leaving a set universe to discover.
That's my whole point. Sure you can "discover" the rest of the universe. But you are not discovering anything, you are just witnessing what already exists. It's not magic, it's boring. it really kills the mysticism out of it. Don't you think? If everything exists only because you witnessed it, and created it, I personally think that it really kills the motivation to explore further.
Josiah Butler
How so?
Carson Gomez
>They think people should pay for them to spend their lives looking at gay floaty rock, but consistently fail to produce the stardrive.
There's nothing out there. As boring as this stupid procedural space travel game was, this is what awaits you all out there, more pixelated rocks and more boring lifeless planets. Maybe one day you'll find some "life", but anything that you find will just be the result of what you thought you could find. This is why we live in procedural world. The end result will be extremly boring and uneventful, like the last 50 yars of "NASA"'s findings.
