The problem was that they had already passed a bipartisan funding measure in the senate with unanimous republican consent and THEN he decides to say he's not going to sign anything that doesn't fund the wall. He should have done it before congress agreed to fund the government because now it puts the blame solely on him.

Yeah, shutdowns happen every few years but the public still gets super disoriented and confused by them. Had he shutup and kept quiet, there's a decent chance he could have pinned this all on Congress and emerged better in the polls. But by insisting on being this voice of "What the people want!" he's made himself the complete scapegoat for this shutdown and it will hurt him with moderates.
