You can hike in, but not drive in an park. If you're going to Yosemite, stay in Merced, it's a lot cheaper and only 45 minutes from the park. You can probably park somewhere in Mariposa and hike in.

We looked into Northern Sweden/Norway/Finland too, but too much rain even in the summer. Also, interestingly enough more expensive because these trails are now hipster trails with cabins in between you can pay (and which cost a lot).

If you do stay in Merced, thewre are a few good bars. Partisan has a good selection, but a little pricey. 510 Bistro is pretty good too, but some problem. Reilly's is a shit hole and the bouncer was stabbed recently, but it has the best prices and a 30 tap beer list, along with a pretty good whiskey selection.

Let me also give you fair warning as a native. I have stayed in almost every major park in the state south of San Francisco. I will be blunt about it, it's generally not worth it. The people that camp here are loud mouthed, blast music, leave trash everywhere and generally take away from the experience and thats just the natives. You will also encounter hordes of Chinese tourist that have zero regard for anyone else. There's far better places outside of this sad state.

This. Go to parks in Jefferson instead, I recommend Six Rivers in particular, but you really can't go wrong anywhere as the only big touristy area is Shasta and even that is tame. Fun fact: Mendocino County only has one full time park Ranger actually doing work right now, go anywhere you want.

Also don't worry about the shutdown, just hike in anywhere and no one will care. Even if someone does catch you, no action will be taken except asking you to leave, and there are so many parks it's fine to move to another.
