Still no crime wave there. But yes, that's where the shittiest parts of Melbourne are and have been for about forty years (ever since the inner suburbs started getting better). The outer fringes of the city are predictably shitty places to live because they have no transport, infrastructure, or stuff for kids to do that isn't eating fast food or fucking around with cars. So, very predictably, the small range of problems that do exist in Melbourne are mostly focused on the new-ish estates on the outer northern and western fringes of the city.

The Australian economy relies on immigration for skilled labour and to make sure we don't have more old people than young (so the old people can be looked after). I think our immigration rates have been a bit high recently and that local government has created too many restrictions around planning and building approvals. And then we have the housing bubble. All of this together makes the outer suburbs unusually crap places to live and is where less successful immigrants end up, as well as the absolute dregs of Australian bogans.

Immigration is reality but we can do better to design nicer cities and to prevent slum or ghetto areas emerging in the outer burbs, imho.

so its a ponzie scheme where we need more immigrants than old people? and what happens when all those immigrants eventually become old people, just import even more people? that system is not sustainable

We'll hit a limit one day, but we're a long way off. People who know about demographics and resources estimate that we could probably support 100 million people with the resources we have. So we're probably good with similar rates of births and immigration for about the next two-hundred years or so.

There are large parts of Gippsland and the Hunter Valley, for example, that can be used for more intensive vegetable production instead of low-intensity livestock for export. Our economic future is in service industries, high-tech industries, education, tourism, and mining. The agriculture is good for feeding ourselves, imho.

The thing with cronulla round 1 was it was unplanned and just spontaneous, so the coppers didn't have time to send hundreds of diversity hires to contain the aussies. This was a big advertised event without a big rage inducing issue to trigger it (no lifeguards were bashed) so people aren't as riled up and vicpol has too many bodies there
