I know they're just trying to be polite and all; but it always makes them appear more interested and romantically involved in you than they're intending.

It's just really weird to show that level of friendliness to someone you don't know yet. I've had man try to do the same to me, and even then I end up thinking "is this some kind of gay guy trying to hit on me?" OR anything along those lines.
Fuck, I tried that with a guy I didn't know, I most certainly would've been called a "faggot," "homo," and/or probably have my ass beat enough for a two-week stay at a hospital.

I agree, I honestly haven't understood it. Being a nice person is one thing, but really trying to be over the top with friendliness is another, so for a lot of people it can be harder to interpret as just friendliness.
women are all about reputation management. basically PR machines because of evolution. throughout history a women being outcasted from her tribe or having a bad reputation would basically mean death at worst or her not being able to find a man to protector her at best so they evolved this way.

I can't speak for other women but I personally don't like it when strangers call my 'hun' or 'darling'. This is usually cashiers as I'm buying something. I also don't like hugging but it's pretty common for women where I live (Australia) to hug when they meet and when they leave. I don't like it but I do it to seem polite. I think a lot of being a woman is being socialised to be polite. So, to answer your question, may some of these behaviours are the women trying to be friendly because that's socially acceptable as opposed to ignoring you.

I need you to like me as the face of the company, and nicer people tend to be looked as as naive, and therefore dumber than you, and thus nonthreatening. Women are just generally compliant and especially towards men. It's an evolutionary trait they inherited from the times when a man displease with their attitude could just break their neck and be done with it.
