There's nothing wrong with Ubuntu. If you don't like Gnome, you can pick an Ubuntu flavor with a different desktop. I too use KDE Neon, which is Ubuntu with KDE Plasma.

If you want bleeding-edge updates, you could try an Arch-based distro like Manjaro. If you dislike Canonical, Debian-based distros are basically identical to Ubuntu. Otherwise, there's no reason to switch.
