Musical edition

New research suggests that regularly playing an instrument changes the shape and power of the brain and may be used in therapy to improve cognitive skills.

It can even increase IQ by seven points in both children and adults, according to researchers.

Experts said there is growing evidence that musicians have structurally and functionally different brains compared with non-musicians - in particular, the areas of the brain used in processing and playing music.

These parts of the brain that control motor skills, hearing, storing audio information and memory become larger and more active when a person learns how to play an instrument and can apparently improve day to day actions such as being alert, planning and emotional perception.

Lutz Jäncke, a psychologist at the University of Zurich, said: "Learning to play a musical instrument has definite benefits and can increase IQ by seven points, in both children and adults.

"We found that even in people over the age of 65 after four or five months of playing a instrument for an hour a week there were strong changes in the brain.

"The parts of the brain that control hearing, memory, and the part that controls the hands among others, all become more active. Essentially the architecture of the brain changes.

"For children especially we found that learning to play the piano for instance teaches them to be more self-disciplined, more attentive and better at planning. All of these things are very important for academic performance, so can therefore make a child brighter.

Get a job is the most important thing you can do to improve your life

A soprano recorder flute is probably the cheapest real instrument in existence, it is very simple to play and is very relaxing and calming. It is also lightweight, easy to transport and easy to clean.

That goes without saying, but it does not do much to increase your intellectual faculties. Stop being so stereotypically materialistic.

I’m not sure user. I’m a multi-musician (guitar, piano, drums & cello) and I’m a fucking idiot.

You're forgetting that thing is an absolute pussy crusher too. Lol. I been playing guitar bass and drums for a few years now, i recommend but be wary of other musicians. They are emotional, flakes and often druggies/drinkers.

Learning another language is also highly beneficial to your brain.

How Being Bilingual Protects the Brain Against Aging
Another way being bilingual can help your adult brain is by protecting it against aging.

Knowing a second language can postpone the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s by an impressive 4.5 years. (20)

This is significantly better than the best Alzheimer’s drugs which can delay symptoms by only 6-12 months. (21)

Related on Be Brain Fit —
Mild Cognitive Impairment Treatment: What You Can Do

Brains scans found a noticeable difference in the brain activity of bilingual seniors.

Their brains worked much more efficiently, more like those of young adults. (22)

Scientists believe that these seniors’ brains have more reserve brainpower which helps them compensate for age-related memory loss.

There’s always been a question as to whether bilinguals’ capacity to stay mentally sharp is really due to overall better education, but this doesn’t seem to be the case.

Interestingly, there is no correlation between the benefits of speaking two languages and literacy.

Bilinguals who cannot read and write experience the same protective benefits against dementia as literate bilinguals. (23)

If knowing two languages is good for your brain, is knowing more languages even better?

The answer to this question seems to be “yes.”

Research shows that the more languages you know, the less likely you are to experience memory loss and cognitive decline. (24)

Exactly, if you can play any instrument well, women wil flock to you. And 100% spot on, most dedicated musicians are fucked in the head.

Best source for self-taught piano? No money to splurge for a teacher, unfortunately. Which I feel inadequate instruction still doesn't quite amount to the findings, especially if it was during the formative years where brain plasticity makes these paramount changes.

Can't help you there, I don't play piano. I would like to get into it eventually and plan to have my children take piano lessons though.

>spans 10% of an octave
yeah, nah

Lifting weights is highly beneficial for both mind and body.

And now we have some science to back some of this up. According to a recent study looking at participants aged 55-86 with early signs of dementia, weight lifting may actually be able to reverse ‘mild cognitive impairment’ to an extent (report, study). The researchers hypothesize that this effect might also be translate to healthy individuals. The team also revealed in a subsequent paper that the participants’ ‘global cognition’ improved to a significant degree as a result of the weight training, whereas the brain training alone was not able to replicate this effect.

Dr Yorgi Mavros, one of the researchers, said that the follow-up revealed a correlation between brain function and muscle strength.

“The stronger people became, the greater the benefit for their brain.”

The weight training protocol in question closely resembled what you might expect to see in any gym-rat’s diary: reps at 80% of the participants’ 1RM (one rep max). They only trained twice a week however, suggesting potential room for even greater improvement! MRI scans showed that specific brain regions were increasing in size as a result of the training, pointing to some potential explanations as to what was going on.

Weightlifting is good for your heart and it doesn't take much
Date:
November 13, 2018
Source:
Iowa State University
Summary:
Lifting weights for less than an hour a week may reduce your risk for a heart attack or stroke by 40 to 70 percent, according to a new study. Spending more than an hour in the weight room did not yield any additional benefit, the researchers found. The results show benefits of strength training are independent of running, walking or other aerobic activity.

Lift weights, learn an instrument, work on becoming a polyglot (someone who speaks multiple languages). Become stronger, smarter, more attractive.

Any tips to become more extroverted? Also how can I stop freezing up when someone asks a question I don't like, and instead just answer it without feeling shame

Attached: 1444780464834.jpg (480x371, 20K)

Try to raise your testosterone. Garlic is known to raise testosterone, lifting weights, ginger, higher T will help you be more extroverted. Just try talking to more people in general, force yourself to do it. You will screw up, but who cares? Practice makes perfect.

Thanks user
I guess there's no easy fix and I should just do it

>and is very relaxing and calming
My neighbours disagree with that.

To improve the self, you have to build a family. There is only so much you can do alone.

Find yourself a partner you love, but more importantly who completes you as a person. Don't be vain either and marry someone based on how physically attracted you are to them. If you can find a wife (or husband if you're a woman) who makes you want to be a better person while also being a 10/10, go for it. But for most that won't happen.

Then build a family. That doesn't mean just popping out a couple of kids and saying 'the white race is saved.'

That means saving up, and buying land if it's available in your area. Build your family a permanent place in the world. One that will survive no matter how shitty things get.
Food scarce and prices high? Who gives a fuck, you grow your own.
Wood / fuel impossible to come by? You were smart and have a cycle for growing trees on a couple acres of your land.

Familial self sufficiency is the goal for self improvement. Don't lose sight of it.

Brainy beverage: Study reveals how green tea boosts brain cell production to aid memory
Date:
September 5, 2012
Source:
Wiley
Summary:
It has long been believed that drinking green tea is good for the memory. Now researchers have discovered how the chemical properties of China's favorite drink affect the generation of brain cells, providing benefits for memory and spatial learning.

"We proposed that EGCG can improve cognitive function by impacting the generation of neuron cells, a process known as neurogenesis," said Bai. "We focused our research on the hippocampus, the part of the brain which processes information from short-term to long-term memory."

The team found that EGCG boosts the production of neural progenitor cells, which like stem cells can adapt, or differentiate, into various types of cells. The team then used laboratory mice to discover if this increased cell production gave an advantage to memory or spatial learning.

"We ran tests on two groups of mice, one which had imbibed EGCG and a control group," said Bai. "First the mice were trained for three days to find a visible platform in their maze. Then they were trained for seven days to find a hidden platform."

The team found that the EGCG treated mice required less time to find the hidden platform. Overall the results revealed that EGCG enhances learning and memory by improving object recognition and spatial memory.

"We have shown that the organic chemical EGCG acts directly to increase the production of neural progenitor cells, both in glass tests and in mice," concluded Bai. "This helps us to understand the potential for EGCG, and green tea which contains it, to help combat degenerative diseases and memory loss."

I was in college for a year (it was an arts course) but I hated it and dropped out.
What should I do?
I was looking into apprenticeships and trades

Sadly that's something you're going to have to decide for yourself.

My suggestion would be to take some time off work.
Go camping and bring literally nothing but food, shelter and maybe a firearm for defense if you can.

Spend several days with nothing to do but think and you'll find your path.

Godspeed user.

Attached: marcus.jpg (3240x2102, 631K)

you should improve anyway dont be a fag but being gay is ok only ok though, if you dont force yourself to marry get some valuable skills and then a decent job(though you should really try to get a business going or investments that do not require time so you have a semi passive income). Then when you get to a decent spot in your life mentor and help other men if you can, remember not to do charity and learn how to screen people giving gibs to shit tier people never helps anyone but there is also people who just need a slight push or kick in the ass to take off. Also find yourself a good group of friends this is the hardest one to do no tips to give ya. This user idea is good as well Sitting down and thinking of what you want and where you want to go will help you tremendously if you actually think it out plant it AND then act on it your plan wont be perfect and will need to be tweak but you'll be much happier knowing youre doing something and going somewhere

Learn multiple trades, skilled labor is vital for civilization. There is no shame in it, anyone who says otherwise is a faggot.

Force yourself to stop being a faggot. Get your testosterone level checked, your hormones may be fucked up, your brain being effeminized by them.

My gf left me and I don't want to be with anyone else but her, how to get over it?

Thanks anons. It really sucks to see the dream of having a family and kids be completely unattainable. I always thought I'd follow my parents but I guess I got dealt a different set of cards.

Maybe I'll start working on some hobbies I've neglected.

I’ve been playing guitar avidly for 11 years and my life is great now. I have a full time job straight out of college and an active band. My guitar skills constantly improve and now my skill level is at a professional level.

I definetely recommend it. I’m not sure what life is like without it, but I’m sure it’s helped improve my cognitive abilities overall

Honestly user, the answer is simple.
You just get over it.

What good does sitting around wallowing in sadness do?
Does it improve your situation?
No.

Move forward, get on with your life.
Accept that she didn't want to be with you, and that you'll not be with her.

Eventually you'll find someone new.

I have a guitar that i haven't picked up in years and want to start again. Any good starters for learning?

Music is a language, so I’m sure the benefits are similar to learning a second spoken language

Go out and talk to people especially girls note not hit on just get to know, also you are a man women should not be your main focus you need big goals and big projects you are supposed to focus on. you probably want to get married so you do need to focus on women a little but you should do that by expanding your social circle people will introduce you to women and you can vet from there

I don't know about raising your IQ, but if a white girl practices flute like in OP's image she can improve her handling of big black cocks

>stimulation to your brain causes it to create different thinking patterns

color me surprised

Good thread. OP is cool guy
Too many woman hate/incel threads, we need more SIG.
Spent the morning playing chopin on the piano and its rainning outside so it was very comfy. Any of u fags play piano?

Download a free program called synthesisia. Thats what i did and im pretty good now

Sorry to hear it, forget her and find a better woman. Just do it, don't think about it. We often overlook women who desperately want us, analyze women you know carefully.

Sometimes I think they are. I can hear my neighbours talking, for example.
Apart from that is a great house.

Simply this. Thanks op

youtu.be/X2WH8mHJnhM

Then just pick a reasonable time for playing, my neighbors like my playing but I keep the volume down or do it during the day.

Good evening anons. Is working out late in the day something to be avoided? I can't help but work out at untold hours so I fear it may be detrimental to me.

Attached: 1536148966598.png (1123x1204, 84K)

Classical pianist and guitarist here and I'm as lazy and terrible at planning as they come. If I had kids and could force them to dedicate themselves to a hobby, any popular team-sport would be a high priority (football, rugby etc). I think they teach you the real skills you need in modern life.

Working out late in the day > never working out.

Attached: noman.png (1920x1080, 416K)

That is true, but I wonder if I should change how I plan out my day just to get to work out earlier.

Also u fags should join in reading 1 book a month this year

Any instrument played badly sounds like shit.

I have been using the same $5 US recorder for the last 20 years, they hold up well and anyone can afford them.

youtube.com/watch?v=fZ5G66XfIPw

I will give it a try.

Better late than never, if I do it after 8:00 pm or so it will keep me awake, so I try to do early in the day.

Stop being gay and seek women instead
seriously

Yeah, but think how stupid you'd be if you didn't play anything.

Honest question: have you tried not being a homosexual deviant?

Alright. Thank you user. On the topic of music, there is only one thing I wish to do, that is to listen to the one song I worship. I know I will not be good at instruments, but singing I can do. Is this something that can also help, to just sing the songs or whistle them?

If you are looking for cheap flute, I recommend chinese dizi flute. Why? Unlike in the West, you don't have to pay a lot of money to get good instrument. A decent dizi costs around 10 dollars, and it's fairly easy to play so go for it

Of course singing can help, it would be wise to develop that if you can.

I know nothing about it, I tend to stay with European instruments and styles of doing things.

If you sleep at least 7 hours a day and don't feel tired when working out there is no problem

Okay.
I will and thanks for everything, friend. Have a good day.

Attached: workout.jpg (1562x4158, 922K)

Have a good day too, friend. This is a great thread, a major part of self improvement is eliminating unnecessary negativity from the mind, we are so oversaturated with negativity from all angles of life it is suffocating.

Women don't love the way men do. You were right for her for a time, but as soon as she got bored or wanted someone else, it was over in an instant. Don't put her on a pedestal. Accept her as a typical woman, and accept women for what they are. In this light, it's less of an emotional hell and more just experiencing a shitty fact of life. There are three billion bitches on this planet, user. A better one is out there.

Attached: 1533772140196.jpg (418x472, 205K)

its been a hard as fuck month bros, i made so much progress but i got cocky and now my tendons are still messed up weeks later and i cant lift, i can feel myself slipping away back to the lesser version, not only that but it feels like my honor is slipping away too

i hope i can fully heal and get back into it lads

What this user said.
Don't worry user, so long as you don't give up it's only a matter of time until you regain what you lost.

Attached: 1519832656710.png (1198x427, 58K)

This is not true for all of them. A woman who is madly in love with you will do absolutely anything for you, and will also put up with anything from you as well.

Thanks user. I'm old but I want to play and git gud to get the brain benefits. I'm very very sad. This bad boy will soon be mine. Hope it'll help.

>I'm very very sad.

Been there before, good luck to you. It is hard to overcome, but it can be done.

It's not like there hasn't been any opportunity. The women in town and at work dress like sluts, but I've never once been turned on, just disgusted.

learn power chords: you can now play most rock and punk songs
>step 2
learn cowboy chords: you can now play country music and campfire songs
>step 3
technical death metal

Literally not possible for an autist

/sig/ is pretty much the future, at least those who go through the wringer. But you have to imagine that we are at the far end of the collective, do you remember how long it took to digsest the red pills, to make them your own, to process and accept them, and to live by them? Years man. It took years and to many who first come here on this board, its their first experience.

so even if it isnt really helpful to us, this complaining about women...it is helpful to them. You should go to infinity chan for a step up on our own pyramid. But if you are like me, then you can find that even there, there exist a problem, if you get to the very end you want to find better odds for employment, and making skills that earn money. Very little for that. Not even the book threads have dived into that.

You're going to suffer for a month or two, there's no way to avoid it. The only way to get past the stage of pain is to talk to new women. Dating aps, bars, dog parks, ect. Hit the gym harder and focus on improving yourself in the meantime. Also you need to think of all the benefits of freeing up your time, and all the negative aspects of your ex.

How do I quit watching porn and masturbating brothers? I thought 2019 was going to be the year I finally kicked it but failed today. Doesn't help that I'm on the computer the whole time. I even changed my DNS to the AD Guard Family DNS but I still change it back when I get the urge.

Hit the supermarket. Look for young women buying food that indicates they know how to cook, there are tons of shy women who cook their own food and live alone.

Go cold turkey and realise that you need to regulate your intake of tempting media.

Attached: Lust.png (1845x945, 470K)

Fase it out. Instead of jerking every day, do it every other day, try to look at women alone with no dicks involved. I don't believe in nofap, but in excess is definitely harmful. If you are fapping all the time, you will have no desire for real women.

>when I think about how I've wasted my fucking strength and aesthetic potential for a large chunk of my 20s (over 2 years) by not getting good sleep and constantly binging on junk food and coffee

REEEEEEEEEEE

I need to summon huge amounts of willpower to eat properly and avoid coffee so I don't ruin my sleep. The actual lifting is fucking easy in comparison. And no amount of hard work compensates for bad sleep.

>how can I stop freezing up when someone asks a question I don't like, and instead just answer it without feeling shame
Depends on what type of shame it is. My opinion is that you should just always be honest. You could probably feel you can get away with telling a white lie, and that's fine, but the purpose of trying to be completely honest it's ultimately being honest with yourself. If you feel shame in your answer to a question, you need to own it and recognise that you should work to change that.

Like recently a qt asked me what I do for work and my living situation, I felt immense shame in both answers, but I didn't lie. I instead used that shame to get a job and start looking for cheap places to live. Now from shame I feel pride.

Use shame to fuel your quest for perpetual self improvement.

Thanks for the screencap, one of my triggers has been looking at thots on instagram and tinder. Guess I should cut out all sources of lust.

Reduce the amount you drink slowly or replace coffee with tea or decaf if you like the taste. Don't drink any fancy flavored teas, just high quality white/green tea(loose-leaf is better) or matcha.

You need to understand what's going on exactly.
1) It's a habit which triggers in certain conditions. Which conditions? Be aware of it, learn to notice it.
2) You need to *understand* why do you refrain. Where does this habit lead, what are its bad sides. What are you achieving?
This whole difference is the same as between reading a paragraph in a school book and being able to answer it in class.
At this point you've just read some threads/pics on pol, but you didn't engrave it in your mind like for example a grammar rule.

1. You will increase your strength.
Archery requires solid positioning (core strength) as well as upper body strength. It involves steady strength and control of your shoulders, chest, arms, and hands.

2. You will gain greater balance and control.
Even with great muscular strength, your brain must work hard to keep your entire body balanced for this sport. Your cerebellum (located at the back of your brain) sends neurotransmitters to the muscles required to hold you steady. Releasing the bowstring in a consistent manner requires smooth control.

3. You will improve your coordination.
During the entire setup and release of the arrow, your eyes, core, upper body, and hands must be totally in sync with each other.

4. You will develop greater focus and endurance.
While your physical body is positioning itself in the best stance for an optimal target hit, your mind needs to tune out distractions and learn how to optimize its focus. The frontal lobe of your brain does this work. It’s neural network helps you to concentrate and give attention to the entire “aim, pull back, let go” process.

Just imagine, long ago all of these skills were performed on horseback while relying on the guidance and steadiness of the horse, or in a chariot — a very shaky, moving device. Here is where core strength and leg strength really came into play!

So, whether you choose to just go for a one-time archery experience or decide that this sport could be a part of your regular health/exercise regime, it is worth exploring this beautifully skillful practice. Aside from the many physical benefits, it will help you to develop specific attention and a very focused nature. It will help you to learn how to tune out your cell phone, social media, and the mindless chatter. It can guide you to allow your great brain to work synchronistically, accessing your neural network of balance, control, focus, attention, coordination, and strength.

I had played instruments and messed around with music software on and off when I was younger, but when I was going through a really bad time recently I picked it up again and focused on making music for months. It really did help in a number of ways and spread out to every other aspect of my life and let me appreciate things in a deeper way.

Im writing this from bed.

I want to improve and have to start by fixing my sleeping schedule but I cant sleep, ive been on bed for almost two hours now, halg an hour trying to sleep but gave up and started to play something on the phone and then came to Jow Forums.

So how do I fall asleep before midnight every night? I am used to going to bed at 3-4 am...

I am focusing on improving my diet (eating lots of vegetables) and cutting porn out of my life.

Go to bed earlier and use less devices before bed. Make a routine. Shower and brush your teeth, then go to bed. Do this every night. A bed time routine is the best way to ensure you actually go to bed. We're creatures of habit.
