He (and Stewart) used to criticize the democrats as well for being fake progressives. Because it's what they are. They're corporatists. Economically, it's all far right in America (welfare is just a bandaid that doesn't address any of the underlying issues, it's just to prevent a revolt).
There's much less nuance on their show now. It's all just "EBIL BLUMPF" and mischaracterizing everything. They're trying to protect the establishment. I can't even imagine how self-righteous anyone still watching that crap must feel. I mean, I used to watch these shows (and I called The Daily Show my daily self-esteem boost show making fun of Americans). And I liked the values that it promoted generally but it turned more and more into straight up political propaganda. The Nightly Show was absolute shit. And Colbert, he looks dead inside desu. Like he doesn't have much of a choice but to keep doing what he's doing. Anyone else think there's something wrong with his eyes? He doesn't seem well.

Who knows though. He could be under a lot of pressure (of all kinds). These shows had a HUGE impact on millennials at some point, so getting them on script is worth a lot.
It could just be that he's either doing this, or he's never getting another real show biz job ever again (they do have blacklists). He might have known this would have been a risk when he signed on for The Late Show, but not that it would get this bad.
