The wall is an idiotic waste of money designed to distract voters from the real issues plaguing this country (the mounting student loan/medical debt, stagnant wages, swelling income inequality). Illegal immigration is a non issue. Border crossings are currently riding a 15 year downward trend. Obama deported more immigrants per year than Trump, mostly because there's nobody to deport anymore.

Even if illegal border crossings WERE a relevant issue, a wall would do little to prevent cartels from getting across. They dug a 1 mile long tunnel just to break El Chapo out of prison, and I'm sure there are already dozens of hidden tunnels that go under the border. The steel slat design can be easily circumvented using improvised explosives, requiring near constant upkeep. Maintaining this wall will cost billions a year while more and more Americans declare bankruptcy due to exponentially increasing medical costs.

Most of the most vital parts of the border already have a wall, what Trump wants to do is add walls to areas that are remote, or areas that literally don't even need it. Also, the destruction to wildlife in many natural areas along the border is simply unacceptable.

In addition to this, the reasons given for the "crisis" and "urgent need" for this wall are complete bullshit such as claiming drugs are smuggled across, when almost all narcotics don't come across the border by border jumpers, they come across smuggled through legitimate border crossings and through ports, and by boats, etc.

There's also the fact that it's clear that Trump is using this right now as a distraction from all the other chaos in his administration, countless resignations / firings, positions that have been vacant for months, corruption by his cabinet officials, not to mention all of the obstruction / collusion / mueller investigation cloud that hangs over Trump's head constantly. He is in an endless battle to try and stay one step ahead of all the investigations into himself, thus he has to constantly distract the media, and honestly the shutdown is perfect for doing just that.

This is the way I see it. One of Trump's campaign advisers probably came up with the idea that Trump should push for a wall, as it was an idea that rural uneducated voters could easily get behind, and since these people are the bulk of Trump's base, it worked pretty well in getting them worked up over a central issue for his campaign. He made all sorts of promises and always made it a central talking point of his campaign rallies, including all the chants and "mexico will pay for it," etc. What was once campaign rhetoric simply used to get low ability people to support him has become a lynchpin in his campaign, a promise he has failed to deliver and apparently it's all his base cares about, even though it's all meaningless and was just used to manipulate them.
