It's actually just because it's fairly common to marry your sixth cousin or something in the South, due to the fact that we live in smaller towns, suburbs, and villages and not massive baby factory cities where someone who isn't related to you at all is just around the corner of your apartment hallway, and the building where you live has a larger population than a normal Southern town.
