Buying a Used Car

I'm going to buy my first car. It's going to be a used car. I have a budget of $14,500 leafbux. I have narrowed my selection down to these:

Mazda 3
Honda Civic
Hyundai Elantra
Toyota Corolla
Kia Forte

All of them will be 2014 or newer, less than 50k km on them, with no accidents reported and preferably one owner if I can find it.

Tell me carfags, are any of my choices retarded? Should I outright eliminate any of those cars from my list? My primary concern is reliability as I'll be commuting a lot.

Myself I have never bought a newish car but most new cars are reliable as fuck. You could probably get away with spending 10 grand on something older.
When buying cars
>Less ks equals less wear
>Don't buy anything rusty
>Servicing is important
>Little problems can cause bigger ones if not fixed.

Look you'll be fine with anything new for just driving around.

buy japanese. honda, toyota, etc.
>korean? ass.
> japanese? not ass
>american? eh

This

Civic and Corolla are probably your best bets for reliability, followed by the Elantra.

If you really want to know this stuff, it's under $10 for a month of digital access to Consumer Reports. They do reliability reporting based on make, model and year.

As if they'll talk about anything other than their autistic riced up anime cars.

I can't really afford anything new because I want a compact and not a sub-compact

>budget of 14,500 Canadian

Dude you could practically buy a brand new car for that. I bought my 2014 cruze off the lot for 16,500 canadian

Buy from a private sale and not a car lot/dealership - you'll save a lot. Ask for maintenance records. Buy a manual and learn to drive it as they're cheaper, more powerful, easier on gas and easier to maintain/repair.

Civics and corollas are best for reliability. Stay away from the Mazda 3, they rust so easily. Elantras aren't known for their reliability.

Don't buy a GM vehicle - had many minor issues with mine and the engine light came on for misfires about 30km past the warranty.

If they're 2014 models only, stay away from Hyundai and Kia. They only decided to make good cars after 2015.

>Buy from a private sale and not a car lot/dealership

I've been told the opposite of this, that I should stick to dealerships only if I want to avoid shady bullshit.

>buy the fastest car for 10K on CarMax with awd
>4K on warranty for 10 years bumper to bumper

like magic

You honestly could get an S4 or some shit and CarMax will pay for every single repair

To add to my post

Less KM doesn't always mean less wear. Highway kms =/= city kms. My car had 120k as of last month (about 70k highway) and it was still running perfectly with minimal maintenance.

Try to find an elderly person selling their car that they barely use. You'll get a good deal on a well maintained and easily driven car.

Never ever ever ever trust the guys at the stealership because they're gonna squeeze every penny out of you that they can. That's their job after all.

styling wise.

not bad OP.

According to the reviews, Jettas are pieces of shit

don't buy

anything made in America
Anything Korean unless it's Genesis/stinger
Trucks because they're shit
Suv because moose test and rollover
Literally any vag product expect for s/RS line even then
no Italian shit ( all fca even beta Romeo is shit )

so that leaves beamer, Merc ( rwd so forget it ), Volvo ( you can't afford the good ones ), s/RS if you want to put up with repairs, wrx if you can find one

no Evo because shit reliability

Mazda is only fed

You could find an older 335xi or S4 or g35 if you're okay with shit I guess

why did Subaru bring everything over to America? It's all shit now

I understand like 5% of what you said. If you absolutely had to pick between a Civic and Corolla what would you go for?

does it snow where you live?

you'll also need snow tires

what part of CarMax bumper to bumper warranty do you not get?

what's with this econobox garbage

dodge dart

Carmax doesn't exist in Canada friendo

I live in Toronto, will definitely be setting aside $1000 for some winter tires

cars are less expensive in the states, so a trip to buy one might be worth it

also might be worth it because a CarMax warranty gets your car repaired at the stealership for free

if not, get a bugeye and hope it doesn't break down too much

Assuming you can snag any of those cars for that price, year and mileage (kilometerage?) I don't think it matters. Any car with that few distance should last for a while. By the time problems arise, it's caused by negligent maintenance or the parts have been ground into dust. People talk about how trash cars can be, but it's always cherry picked. If you live in snow, I really recommend something with awd/4wd and snow tired for the winter. A truck is a pain to park, but being able to haul anything has it's perks

amerimutts literally btfo

My first car I bought was a used 2004 honda civic. 50k km on it. I bought it 10 years ago and I still have it. Only car I have ever owned.

A lot of mechanics say that honda civics are the best vehicles hands down. Pretty much all mechanics are familiar with them so you can go to any auto shop for repairs/maintenance.

I don't see it crapping out anytime soon but if it ever gets totaled I'm going to just buy another used honda civic. They are great on gas which will help out your wallet with how expensive gas is nowadays in leafland.

If I purchase a Civic with 49,000km or 30,447 miles on it, and I maintain it diligently, how long can I expect it to last? I'm thinking in terms of kms or miles.

Well i have close to 140k km on it now and if you do maintain it diligently you should have no problems for a long while. Haven't had any real problems with mine.

I know with newer cars you will have to go to a honda dealership because cars are becoming more and more computerized so just going to any auto mechanic will be less of an option.

I'm not sure if I can answer that question. Any google search can find yahoo questions about it saying civics can last 400k+ km.

Like I said, right now my car has only 140k km on it and I only use it for getting to work, I just walk whenever I can. I haven't really had any problems with it and it doesn't show any signs of kicking the bucket anytime soon.

Look into other websites and do your research. Maybe youtube videos also.

A honda civic wont turn heads or help you with wamen, but if you are looking for a reliable vehicle on the cheap, honda civic is the way to go.

Bump, I need a car too

good advice for cars: look at what taxi drivers are using. money spent on repairs is money wasted so they're finding the car brands that can take the beating they will be subject to

All taxis in my city are Toyota Camrys

Holy shit why is this a thread here? Read the /o/ sticky () and ask on /o/!

most of them are Toyota's because they're sturdy cars

The sticky has car recommendations that go up to 2007, it hasn't been updated in forever you faggot

And no one on /o/ is any help unless you want to buy a 15 year old anime shitbox and pour your entire life into rehabbing it over the next ten years.

... and Jow Forums would be more helpful because????

This is literally off-topic.

Jow Forums has already been worlds more helpful because lo and behold many people on Jow Forums drive automobiles.

How exactly is asking for advice on a car purchase off topic for an advice board you autismo?

>hurr durr any post asking a question is on-topic because it calls for advice
Get the fuck out.

imagine being so anally devastated by someone asking for advice on an advice board. lmao'ing at your life
