I think it really depends on the province. I live in Ontario and have never encountered a problem other than an incompetent nurse in the emergency room. If you have a serious illness you will be looked after right away, the only wait time’s you get is for stitches the flu etc.

frankly I'm thankful to live in a place where I don't have to worry about being bankrupt by a hospital visit if my (((health insurance))) isn't up to snuff or gets declined for whatever reason. It's not perfect but I've not had problems with it, nor have I heard any horror stories from others who rely on it, but that's hardly a sample size. I'm sure there are those who have had issues.

I'm 23 years old. I was peeing blood and felt like I had to piss every 15 mins. I couldn't write tests at school I almost had to throw away my entire degree cause my bladder was fucked and I constantly felt like I was seconds away from pissing myself.
I waited 5 months to see a specialist.
Specialist basically said to me "you are young so you cannot be sick, nothing I can do".
I was in and out in less than 60 seconds after waiting 5 months.

My father went to New York to get a CT scan after a car accident. He could have had a slow bleeding in the brain but would have had to wait 6-12 months to get a CT scan in Canada. So he drove to New York for a day and got it done there.

Theres lots of failures and long wait times in Canadian system, but it worked when I needed it. My liver was completely failing, so they sent me to an ICU that I spent nearly 2 weeks in. They had me on a moderate dose of hydromorphone the whole time to keep me comfy, but not all stoned. I had multiple blood transfusions, they needed some fluid, I'm not sure which, but it was unavailable, so they imported from US four bottles of something at $2500 apiece, one for each day. I got top notch treatment from awesome people and I lived. When I first showed up they were worried I would be dead from that.
Plenty to complain about I guess, but it wont be from me. Not right now. I would be dead without that system. I never could have paid for that. I thank my doctors and nurses because they were so good to me.
Well last spring I ended up getting pericarditis, which is an uncommon inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart. Especially in young people.
Well my first trip to the hospital I was taken to emergency because i was going cold, unable to breathe, and having severe chest pain. The triage nurse did an ECG, didn't see anything, and told to me to wait. Well turns out there supposed to tell you the results, he never did and assumed I was having a panic attack.
Several hours later after being moved from the waiting room to a bed the doctor see's me, and sends me for a number of tests and using ultrasound they see the fluid around the heart.
The doctors themselves were super nice and helpful but the nurses were inattentive and incompetent and while I was there the nurse in the room never checked on any of the patients, never asked if we needed blankets or anything just sat and looked at her phone. It was only when my family came that she got off her ass.
Now to be fair on the other side of the hospital that had a serious emergency come in and the emergency doctor was there which is fine, but it doesn't excuse the nurses not lifting a finger.
Afterwards I was told by other health care people that hospital sucks and the staff is the worst.
My second trip to emergency was to the general hospital that deals with all heart related issues. They were incredibly busy, and I have some funny stories from my stay there. It was a long wait but the staff was all very nice and attentive and the paramedics were hilarious to chat with.

So the options were wait to see if death occurs and then get a CT scan afterwards for no reason, or go get a CT scan immediately in the US.
