That the AfD is "under surveillance" (at first) only means that publicly available information will be evaluated to see whether they break the constitution. If surveillance needs to go beyond that, they also need approval of an independent committee.
So right now, this "surveillance" really isn't anything significant, they'll basically just read their public facebook posts.
And while the AfD is probably the biggest party currenlty under surveillance, the leftist party "Die Linke" has been under surveillance for several years (but they aren't anymore) and many smaller far left groups are under surveillance. So this is not an attack on only the political right, this is just what's usually done when there is reason to believe that a party might be against the constitution.
