The Afghanistan invasion and Iraq were rationalized as the “global fight against Islamists” while in history books the Vietnam war was rationalized as “the fight against communism”. But the official reasons for the Vietnam intervention were very different, America recognized South Vietnam as the official Vietnam vs. North Vietnam as the fake Vietnam (just like Korea). But did anyone ever believe this?

A navy vessel reported that they were being fired upon by north Vietnamese ships using torpedoes while the USA was not involved in the war. The same vessel admitted it was an error with the sonar operator mistaking the ship slapping the water during maneuvers making a near identical sonar signature.
LBJ looking for a reason to get involved in the war to churn out more weapons and get fat kick back checks pretended the vessel didn't issue a correction and just ran with the narrative of the north Vietnamese attacking the USA unprovoked to start a war. It was years later when the truth came out.
