Instead, he could have used that money to pay off people's mortgages and the banks still would have got the cash. Tens of thousands of people could have had their largest debt gone, gained an extremely valuable asset, had their disposible income increase by as much as 50% of their total income, and the banks still would have received the exact same amount of money in their accounts to prevent them from failing.

Letting the banks fail and real estate prices drop would have been worse in the short term, but better in the long term.
