They were very extensive, mostly aimed around two things, economic reforms (mostly allowing private enterprize and introducing free market mechanisms, but without giving up state control of the economy) and political reforms (the division of the CCP into two "wings" that alternate in power, the Maoists and the Modernists, in order that China could benefit from the advantages of a two-party system without actually HAVING a two party system). Xi has throttled the economic reforms in favor of dim witted central planning, and literally purged the Modernist wing of the party, killing and exiling the majority of their leaders.

I have a passing knowledge of these, but I don't really know all that much about Xi or his alleged counter-reforms. I know he instated himself as president for life and banned winnie the pooh, but that is really as far as my knowledge about him goes.
Isn't a slowing economy simply a result of a saturated global markets, antagonism of the US, the fact that they have been playing catch-up but are now approaching peer status, and that insane growth rates are simply impossible to sustain? Like Japan for instance.

China's economy isn't slowing, it's crashing. It has a bunch of bubbles that were caused by reckless idiocy and mismanaging, the currency is artificially inflated to encourage exports which hurts the common Chink on the street in favor of the handful of government officials who control the major industries, and the whole "Deng deal" of increasing prosperity but no increase in civil liberties is breaking down. This is even without considering how badly Xi has botched foreign affairs, Deng understood that places like South East Asia and Taiwan were destined to become wholly dependent on China economically, and that "formally" annexing them was a waste of time as well as a provocation to the rest of the world, but Xi wants the "glory" of annexing these regions by force, and by stating this openly he has squandered the goodwill China built up in the region and made his country into a boogeyman.

I personally choose to view every claim of imminent economic collapse with a good deal of skepticism, whether it is Japan, China, Russia, Iran, EU or the USA that is being discussed. We will see how it goes I suppose, but China has managed to develop some strong industrial pillars. They've managed to avoid crowding in the cities, people are getting wealthier albeit slowly, and the domestic market is growing. I would think a Japan-like situation of slow stagnation to be a more likely outcome.
