Grew up around shitloads of these guys. They're actually pretty good neighbors. They'll sell you top tier produce and do construction jobs for dirt cheap. One funny thing is that if you ever travel by Greyhound in Amish country, it'll be packed with ladies in bonnets. For some reason it's okay for them to ride in other peoples motor vehicles. They'll also be asking to borrow your telephone a lot. Oh, and they smell like an absolute horses asshole from yards away. Be careful driving at night because those buggies are damn near invisible in the dark. Pretty nice people overall, but they do tend to have some weird genetic issues.

It's not for no reason, they're one of the few communities in the USA that has successfully resisted the cancer of modernity.

There was a late 80s TV show on NBC called Aaron's Way about an Amish family that moves to California to take care of a relative's farm. Though it sometimes dealt with adult issues, in general it was a wholesome show that put the Amish in a good light.

This amish man and his wife got off too (apparently the amish use the fuck out of the trains, it was packed with them). I was waiting on my ride when the amish guy approached me. They're pretty decent people, but they need to quit resisting simple solutions that make them easier to live with. A bunch moved in to my home town, and refuse to put shit bags on their horses when they're on public roads and trails. Such a simple thing would make almost no one care about them. I'm kind, I slow my vehicle rpm when passing by one same side or not, give a wave and nod, they can live how they want, but a few simple things that don't impose on their faith would integrate them a lot better with those around them.

Amish enforce their rules selectively. Most of their prohibitions on technology are against personal indulgence, but they will accept and use technology when it benefits the group, or the business. It's not unusual to see trucks going in and out of their communities, to buy produce, they just prefer not to use them, themselves.
They probably determined that taking a train, or bus to CA was beneficial to the whole, so they allowed it. Amish don't have strict "laws" against stuff, they just prohibit it in their own communities - and each one has it's own version of the rules, as there's no central authority. They'll use hospitals if it's necessary, for instance, but for minor stuff they use local doctors. They just don't take part in the health insurance scam, and pay cash when they need to go to a hospital or dentist for things they can't get done in their own town.

They don't like outsiders and call us all "English".
