You want to fill the gap, retard, and too much is better than too little to make for a proper seal. Excess can be shaved if necessary.

Instructions on the can say to use it upside down. Go ahead and use it upright if you want to spray out all the gas before using up the foam compound. And you want to get it deep inside that space so it can seal all the way to the back and not bulge and drool out the front. Why waste half the foam by having to shave it off?

Get a foot of plastic aquarium tubing and attach it to the end of the can. Bam; now you have room to hold the can upside down.

It's also easier to snake and aim it wherever you want with flexible tubing, and it's transparent so if you have a lot of different places you need to foam up you can do a better job modulating the flow without it getting all over the place.
