I would make the distinction different though. For example i heard a lot of times that each occult school will eventually lead to the conclusions that all the rituals, symbols and such are useless, and what matters is the state of mind and the believe. They merely use these symbols and rituals to introduce a chain of cause and effect, introducing rationality into it, and as such strengthen their believe in the ritual working.
