As someone who lives in a shitty neighborhood in a major city and has to step over unresponsive human-shaped pieces of shit and discarded needles every day on the way to work, I don't favor anything that keeps these things alive any longer. If we do have government funded safe injection sites, then there should be a requirement to have the druggies sign a consent form to have themselves detained for a period of time. Or not even a form but a sign that says "if you use the facility/service you will not be allowed to leave for X months". So one free drug / safe supervised injection results in being detained without further access to drugs for some period of months. I think a lot of addicts would fall for this since they are so high time preference, and thus they would be forced rehab would give them the opportunity to kick the addiction. There needs to be a stick involved, free access to drugs is just giving out carrots and enabling their addiction. Absent some kind of significant "stick" then I think these facilities are pretty naive, heinous, and detrimental to society.

Then perhaps it saves money relative to letting them sponge off the system getting treatment for HIV and using ambulances, but they should still be forced into rehab the monent they use these facilites if that can proven to be cheaper since the cost of running the rehab would be cheaper than offering other medical services they would use in enabling their addiction. The rehab needs to reinforce to them that society will not tolerate their addiction, so it's either beat it or die. Enabling is not compassionate.
