Marxism shares traits with religions, or cults. To say it's naked envy is oversimplifying the issue. Rather, it's people being told, cajoled, and convinced into thinking that they are being wronged. That is where these strange assertions that wealthy, privileged people in the West today are being oppressed more than ever come from. How often have you heard leftists complain about "the media", despite their ideology having a majority share of all media?
If you want to sell a big idea, you have to invent a big problem that necessitates your idea. Every cult type movement makes big claims about some sort of alternate history. Yakub created white people, for instance. Marxists have this, too, with the myth of primitive socialism. And, more recently, the claim that historical Europe was just as ethnically diverse as modern Europe (but they all disappeared before camera's were invented, and we needed to import them all over again). Every cult type movement has a type of promised land future prediction. This is world communism. It'll work, magically, but you need to hand all power to a monolithic government, and that needs to be done worldwide.
It's snake oil. Modern leftism takes people who are in the historically unique position that they can gorge themselves with food 24/7, and then tells them they're underprivileged because of it.

It's the mutualistic conspiracy between leftist voters and the politicians they empower. The politicians are in it for the power, the voters are in it as a means of avoiding the burden of responsibility and healthy social standards of behavior. Voters empower the politician, and in return the politicians delivers policies which enable their avoidance of self-responsibility (for example the enabling single mothers or the lazy through welfare).
There is the economic component that motivates the left which is their desire to exist as parasites, and then there is the social component which seeks to be freed from the consequences of a healthy society naturally finding certain behaviors to be unacceptable (hence the left's attempts at normalizing ever sicker forms of degeneracy). Both the economic and the social component can be lumped together as two forms of the politicians enabling the leftist voter to be their worst selves, as it is easier to be a terrible person than a good responsible one who is acting in accordance with the long term health of civilization.
Envy is just one motivation that facilitates their motivation to go down this path. People on the right feel envy but they generally respond to the emotion in healthier more respectable ways.
