It's one of the very few times that I actually had a physical reaction to something someone said. As an American I can visualize it with unsettling clarity because this is exactly what has happened to Native American culture. They have been basically reduced to selling trinkets to uninterested tourist and are pretty much a dying people.

A culture can be revived. Greek philosophy was preserved by the Arabs and that knowledge eventually lead to an European renaissance. There is still hope for Europe, but it's pretty certain America is doomed.

It's better to not loose it in the first place, if our culture survives this batch of elders diying we are pretty much golden imo.

Just think about this: Greeks painted their statues with bright and beautiful colors. Renaissance sculptures are all white because they never knew that.

Once the chain of transmission of a culture is broken, Tradition dies. Renaissance thinkers could LARP as Greeks all day, but they just never had access to the unwritten Traditions of the Greeks. Plato himself had lots of unwritten doctrines that gave real form to his written works. We will never know what those were like.

They become pro-free immigration the minute you replace capitalism with a alternative system (democratic socialism, communism, anarcho-syndicalism) -- the difference being that their opposition is one of a purely economic perspective (lowering wages) whilst the raging right-winger opposes it on more mistifed "culutral" or racial grounds. Before the last 30 years or so anti immigration was the norm on the left. Liberalisation during the 70s and 80s killed that strand in the mainstream though many of us remain.

Reality is the 'left' today are just socially progressive capitalists in the pocket of slightly different multinationals to the right.
