Liberals have all of these organizational pins because they need to feel like they belong to something. Without church or community in their lives they found a cheap replacement. Putting stickers and buttons on everything signals that you belong to something even if you aren't very active. There is also the hope that someone will see those pins and engage you in conversation because they belong to that organization too.
Conservatives do this shit for the very same reason. Some might do it in rebellion against globo-homo or to trigger liberals in the area, but these people for the most part are just as lonely as the libs.

The number of bumper stickers one has is inversely proportional to their sanity. (an exception being hikers who have all their locations on their car, which is silly but doesn't signify anything else).
