I think Sagan was very smart, very genial, and very good at communicating science to every day people in a way that was informative, entertaining, and not condescending. He sparked wonder, interest, and hope in a way that no popular scientist really has.

Unfortunately, I know that if he was still alive he would be used as a culture war pawn in a way that would be most unfortunate and ultimately destructive
