The problem with this idea was actually exposed by one of the big border patrol hiring surges earlier this century.
Inexperienced and less trustworthy people became border patrol agents and they turned, they started working with cartels and making money from the deug trade.

Individual citizens on the border may have personal agendas which may make the whole country less safe.

I'm so sorry that DC is getting a taste of life in the midwest twenty years ago. Even the most invested, lifetime politicians will say the government is a bloated, efficiency-bleeding mess. People get lifetime appointments to jobs, as if anyone says anything against them, they level complaints or tie up the system for years, all the while drawing a check if they do work or not.

I'm sorry they thought the gravy train would never run out. We thought the same thing, then all the auto plants were shut down and replaced by pet minority enclaves. The general response was "sorry, good luck" at best, and dismissed as inbred hicks at worst. So if these workers didn't take any steps to plan ahead, or secure anything, I guess that's just too damn bad, isn't it?

Tell the to go to the department of human services. Tell them to try and get some kind of help, when the programs are already overladen to bursting. Let them feel the joy of hearing "I want to help, but..." dozens of times. Let them decide what bill to pay when, so they can still get food. Let them learn what can and can't be made from a few cans of food.

Shut it down for years, if that's what it takes. We're used to hardship, it's time everyone got adjusted to the same.

Back pay is only for actual government workers, not the thousands upon thousands of contractors, consultants, and various other outside staff that pad out all the projects and committees. Them, they get nothing, even when government starts up again. Which means a lot of bullshit programs are going to dry up and fall off the body politic now that the blood flow is cut off. a few more weeks and only actual people employed by the government will be able to hold out.
