>HAYAT TAHRIR AL-SHAM ACCUSES KURDISH SECURITY FORCE ASAYISH OF PLOTTING ASSASINATIONS OF ARAB COMMANDERS IN SDF
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) has accused Asayish, a security force of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and their political wing, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) , of plotting assasinations of Arab commanders in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The YPG and the PYD are the main political and military force within the SDF. There is an opposition to the Kurdish dominance in the group among the SDF’s Arab commanders. The main reason of this opposition is the hostile behaviour of the YPG, the PYD and Asayish towards the local Arab population and the opposition towards the project of “Kurdish independent state” in the SDF-held area.
The recent Hayat Tahrir al-Sham accusations are likely designed to fuel these tensions further. They also contribute to a similar media campaign, which is being carried by the Turkish media.

>SAUDI-LED COALITION ASSASSINATED FORMER COMMANDER OF YEMENI AIR FORCE – REPORT
The Saudi-led coalition has assassinated Major General Ibrahim Ali al-Shami, a former commander of the pro-Houthis Yemeni Air Force, in a special intelligence operation inside the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, the al-Arabiya TV reported on January 17 citing special sources.
According to the UAE-based TV channel, Maj. Gen. al-Shami occupied the 19th position on the Saudi-led coalition’s most wanted list, which includes the names of 40 pro-Houthis military and political figures. The list is headed by Houthis leader Abdul-Malik Badreddin al-Houthi.
Contrary to al-Arabiya claims, al-Masirah TV said that Maj. Gen. al-Sham died of natural causes. The Yemeni TV channel even published a message of condolence that was sent by Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Houthi-dominated Supreme Political Council, to al-Sham’s family.

>Ceasefire violations by militants reported from Syria’s Latakia, Hama, Aleppo
Numerous shelling attacks by militants operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone were reported from Syria’s Latakia and Hama governorates and Aleppo’s neighborhoods, chief of the Russian Center for reconciliation of the conflicting sides in Syria Sergei Solomatin said on Friday.
"Illegal armed groups operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone continue to violate the ceasefire. Thus, during the day, shelling attacks by militants were reported from the settlements of Nahshebba, Darh Abu-Assad and Kuljok in the Latakia governorate; from the settlement of Zellaquiyat in the Hama governorate' and from Aleppo’s Al-Bogaz neighborhood. Apart from that, militants shelled Aleppo’s southwestern suburb. One Syrian soldier was wounded," he said.
He also said that during the day officers of the Russian reconciliation center conducted two humanitarian operations in the settlements of Saida in the al-Quneitra governorate and Wraida in the Aleppo governorate. A total of 1,000 bags with food products and one tonne of fresh bread were handed out to civilians.
Solomatin also said that refugees continue to return to their homes in Syria. The Russian reconciliation center is helping to ensure operation of ten checkpoints. "As of January 17, 2019, as many as 217,476 people have returned to Syria," he reported. More: tass.com/world/1040769
>Nuns return to ancient Orthodox monastery in Syria’s Maaloula
Nuns have returned to the ancient Orthodox Monastery of Saint Thecla in Maaloula, a Syrian town some 50 km north of Damascus which has been freed from terrorists and is now being rebuilt, the head of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch said.
"The nuns have returned to the monastery and stay there now," Patriarch of Antioch and All East John X said at a meeting with a delegation of Russian lawmakers. "Thanks to the resumption of monastic life, about 290 families have returned to Maaloula, and now 300 families live there."
Built into the rugged mountainside at an altitude of more than 1500 m, Maaloula is famed as being one of the last three villages in the world where Aramaic - the language of Jesus Christ - is still spoken. The town also houses two ancient monasteries: the Eastern Catholic monastery of Saint Sarkis and the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Thecla. More: tass.com/world/1040587

>Navy sailor killed in Syria terror blast remembered as hero
Chief Cryptologic Technician Shannon M. Kent, 35
“She was a wonderful person and was an honor student,” principal Tara Grieb told The Post. “We’re very proud of her and her service. We’re supporting her family 100 percent at this time of sorrow.”
“She was a brilliant kid. Many, many people here knew her and they really admired her,” Cloud said. “She was really a unique person and had a gift for language. She knew she was in a dangerous place and it took real courage to go there.”
Kent enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 11, 2003, and graduated in February 2004 from boot camp in Illinois, according to the military.
She was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and assigned to Cryptologic Warfare Activity 66, based out of Fort Meade, Maryland.
During her years of service, she received nearly a dozen honors, including the National Defense Service Medal and two Joint Service Commendation Medals, Navy officials said.

What they can realistically do that is not going to end up being to costy? The only thing i can come up would be using navy to launch concentrated attack with cruise missiles like U.S does. Other than that the response has to be symmetric.

>First test for IDF’s Kochavi: 10,000 pro-Iran troops massing to cross into Syria from Iraq This would be the largest pro-Iranian military increment into Syria since the Hizballah intervention of 2014 – and Tehran’s rejoinder to Israel’s warnings.
The 10,000 troops massed on the Iraqi border belong to the large Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) aka the Hashd Al-Shaabi militia, DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources report. They have been ordered to stand there by Iran’s Middle East commander, Al Qods chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Their commander is one of his deputies, Mahdi al-Muhandis, an Iraqi of Iranian descent. This Iraqi force awaits a green light to cross into northern Syria from President Bashar Assad.
Tehran is anxious to find out whether Israel – or the US – means to actively halt this major troop buildup by bombing it from the air. If the PMU fighters are not stopped as soon as they set foot on Syrian soil, the Iranians will have won this round and feel able to safely augment the PMU force of 10,000 fighters by pouring thousands more into Syria.

>Being this dumb as confusing potential speculation with actual possibilities.
>Give them weapons to the syrians to shoot the missiles and maybe the plane but thats it
The thing is that you will have to have point defence for the place that is being targeted to have realistic chance to intercept. Meaning that you can only protect really meaningful targets, otherwise use concealment and movement. For the part of shooting down the planes, unfortunately Israel can use Bekaa valley and the topography in the area to extent that it is really hard to target the planes in meaningful way without proper airforce. Atleast on strikes in the Damascus area.
