A pipeline blew up while locals were stealing fuel near the town of Tlahuelilpan, in central Mexico's Hidalgo state. Dozens were killed and dozens more severely burned out of a crowd of around 300. A far left populist won the elections last year. After New Year, he revealed to the media the deep web of corruption around the high gas prices. Politicians were milking the gas pipelines and establishing their own gas stations to enrich themselves, and justified the high prices as "tax increase". Two years ago, gas prices were around 10 pesos in average. Now they are around 20 pesos.
About the explosion, the official version is an accident: some "huachicoleros" (gas thiefs) did something very wrong while milking the pipeline and boom. I personally think our dear president is doing some purging under the shadows. It would not be the first time.
And nothing of value was lost. Except maybe gasoline.
