One of the things that makes modern Europe unique (or at least slightly-before modern Europe) is that they have been distinctly different cultural elements operating in parallel to the same socio-cultural order. That doesn't nessessarially, mean they are inherently compatible, nor that a merge is inevitable.
What I could see is a proper Confederacy of nation's operating like the EU or UN was initially concepted as, rather than what they have become. Full national autonomy between member states, but a mutual understanding that in case of emergency everyone will be on the same side.
Anything more than that I don't think is probable. The independent nation's have been around to long to merge like that. Long at France and Italy for examples of the result of such an attempt.

It's remarkable how much you can accomplish when you have a surplus of expendable labor. Turning ablind eye to the accomplishments of the chinese (stolen or in-house) is probably the single greastest mistake that someone make regarding world politics today.
