The French actually fought surprisingly stubbornly against the germans. Even though almost all the best division of the french army had been destroyed, the rest of the army fought on, and in mere weeks developted new so-called hedgehog tactics to fight of the german advance. It was at this point, after the encirclement and destruction of the best french forces that the germans actually suffered the most casualties during the battle of France.
This is how the frontlines looked in France when they finally agreed to a armistice and surrender. People like to rag on france for capitulating too soon, but the fact is that by the time they surrendered, the French had lost almost everything and the frontline had collapsed.
