Eucalyptus trees do best where virtually nothing else will grow.
Out in Northern California along the coast there are vast areas where the only native trees that thrive are bay laurels and oak trees, and they grow fucking slow as all get up.
You want to grow a wind break? You want to grow some erosion control? You want to grow some shade trees? You can plant some bay laurels and oak trees, but only in the valleys of the hills, not on the top, usually only on one side of the hill, and it will take your entire life for them to grow to the size you want.
Or you can plant eucalyptus. And they will grow anywhere. Anywhere. And they will grow fast. And they are completely maintenance free. You don't even need to water them. They're unkillable. You'll get your shade. You'll get your wind break. You'll get your erosion control. They're amazing.
And believe it or not, they don't burn any better than pine trees, and there are whole areas of the USA surrounded by pine forests.
Eucalyptus trees are amazing. Don't plant a blue gum eucalyptus right next to your house and you'll be fine. Got an empty field and want to see some trees grow in it before you die? Blue gum eucalyptus are a great choice.
