The purpose was to enable a limited number of troops to hold off a direct invasions from germany. They fucked up in other ways.
1. Tanks were spread out and used as infantry support.
2. Took the bait for the a new VonSchifflin plan instead of the Ardennes thrust
3. Command and Control were shit
If they formed armoured units like germany, and practiced better command and control they would have beaten the germans to a stalemate.

Every simulation shows the Maginot line was irrelevant. In 1940 the Germans can directly assault the Maginot line and still win. No decisive attack through the Ardennes cutting off the northern allied armies needed. In these simulations the Germans still force a total French surrender by late August or September.
In fact the simulations show that the Germans dont even need Armour in 1940. They can attack with only infantry and still win. In these simulations without Armour the Germans still force a total French surrender by late October or November.
The idea of Panzer divisions as war winning weapons is a myth. The fact is WW2 was still overwhelmingly an infantry battle.
It was the immense superiority of the German infantry doctrines that gave the Germans much of the edge. Better organizational regain ability, better tactical leadership, greater command flexibility, better inter-unit cooperation, communication, response initiatives etc etc I could go on... it all meant the average German infantry unit, from squad size up to division size could punch well above its weight compared to Allied units. The Allies didn't stand a chance in 1940 whatever they did. They either get outmaneuvered and outfought as historically happened, or they just simply get outfought in a broad front grind fest.

No, not HOI, although that game isn't too bad as a simulation on grand strategic scale when played with a mind of replicating historical events and compensating for the appalling stupid AI.
The conclusions are from war college simulations, including West Point and Sandhurst, you can find find the info if you dig long enough. Its been years and I no longer have the source and cba finding them again for your sake, although iirc the simulation where the Germans have no tanks and still win was done especially to demonstrate to disbelieving students the popular misconception of tanks being war winners.
