Depends what you do. But with the Olympics coming, and if you are white and speak native English, know how to behave normally, it is very easy to get work.

What kind of work do you want to do? English teachers typically don't need to speak Japanese, really. Of course it helps in day-to-day living, but it's not a requirement to be an EFL teacher. Any other type of salaryman position, yeah, you'd have to have a high level of Japanese. Then, if you were to work for a major Western company and get transferred to Tokyo, you probably would not need to worry too much about speaking really good Japanese. So it depends on the kind of work that you are interested in doing and your situation.

Yeah. 90,000円 a month did not get me a very big apartment in Shibuya / Shinjuku, but 60,000円 a month north of Tokyo gives me a much nicer place with a lot more room. I live just a few blocks from where I teach, so I can ride my bicycle to work. It's actually conveneint and I've gotten used to it. And I'm saving money. I used to go to Thailand all the time. I haven't been since 2014. In fact, I was just looking at some pictures of Phuket on my hard driver this morning when I was organizing some files. I thought that maybe it's time for a trip back to Bangkok, at least.
However, if you are an entrepreneur or wish to work for small companies that cater to foreigners, or if you can use a computer, there's lots of work. Also Shibuya is ground zero in Japan for crypto.

Get a bit of money behind you to cushion yourself when you arrive. Don't think you need to go to the big cities. Smaller cities are good too and cheaper and offer a different way of life.

Consider and maybe do courses on entrepreneurship. Making a business here is much easier than in the US/CDN.
