Their oil is heavy and very expensive to refine. So they sell it cheaply. Is it really "cheap" when you factor in the refinement process? Up to you to decide.

Chavez, Maduro's predecessor enacted a bunch of socialist hand outs for the poor using the profits from the country's oil. This made him and his party popular but did nothing to develop the country's economy be it their oil industry, tourism or anything else.

Chavez dies, and Maduro his hand picked successor is unsurprisingly elected in what seemed to be a legit election.

This was around the time that the US started fracking which increased the global supply of oil while a slow down in the Chinese economy diminished demand thus sending oil prices crashing. This was a particular problem for Venezuela since their oil requires a lot of processing to get it to be usable which means that it isn't profitable at lower prices and they never built the facilities to efficiently process it themselves.

So now the Venezuelans aren't making money off their oil, they haven't developed any of the other sectors of their economy and they have a government that's going broke paying them all the socialist handouts and who's answer to all this is to repeatedly blame private companies for screwing the people, nationalize the company and drive it out of business through shear incompetence. This also means that no one wants to invest in the country for fear that if they do the government will just steal whatever they build.

Then Maduro rigged his reelection and now the Venezuelans are being ruled mainly through fear and intimidation.

They were doing really well in the past. But the fall started with Chavez. They were REALLY shit under him. Instead of diversifying their economy with the oil money, this guy used social programs to keep his ratings up. Imagine a whole nation on welfare like black people in the US. This strained their capital and the downfall started. With the crash in 2015, their shit oil became as valuable as dirt and had nothing more to sustain their already dying economy. They never bothered to diversify. That was their fuckup. Sanctions were just a nail in the coffin.

Imo the oil is probably a secondary goal. Two birds with one stone I guess.

Their economy is based on oil, once it started devaluing the economy went straight down and so did the government. Chavez had a chance to prevent this but he never really searched for an alternative for their oil based economy, counting on nothing would ever happen to devalue the oil barrel price.

Now Maduro instead of admitting that mistaken have been made and work out to rebuild the country, simply decided to blame everyone else for the collapse of their economy, which obviously includes US.

Unfortunately for the population, the army is still paid and loyal to the Maduro's regime.

I agree we have way too much debt; but relative to GDP we're not really much of an outlier. The Chinese have a similar debt to GDP ratio as we do (around 100% of GDP) and some countries Japan in particular (200% of GDP) are way worse than we are.

I'd say our biggest problem is over regulation. We have a lot of red tape and bullshit cronyist taxes that serve our big corporations but hinder upstart competition and investment.

I took the time to show in a graph the price evolution of a common local item in Venezuela in the past six months, so that you can see more clearly the economic disaster that has happened in that country under Chavism, and why people prefer to deal in shitcoins rather than the local currency.
